1979 200 HP EVINRUDE WITH LOW PICK UP
I just got this motor and there is a water hose attachment on the lower unit. I hooked uo the water hose and when I turned it on water came squrting out of where the lower ubnit attaches to the part directly above the cavation plate. I noticed the upper part has a crack in it and therte is a space where the lower unit fits up against the upper. The space starts at the crack and goes about 3 inches toward the frone of the part. heres my question
does this water leak effect the amount of water cooling the engine. I can post a pic of what I am trying to explain if nec3essary.
Thanks for any thoughts

sounds like the water pump or seals are gone, unless your putting to much pressure on the system. most side muff attachments will blow off unused water.some low water muff attachment seal pretty tight.

It could be a shabby water pump installation where there is a seriously compromised gasket, or more likely the water tube didn't get lined up correctly on the gearcase at the last installation and whatever the problem may be it needs corrected before running...

OK but I want to hook up the hose and turn it on then take a pic and show you where the water is comming out.

Are You getting any water coming from the tell-tale hose, or getting any measurable water pressure on the gauge..?

some of the late model lower units actually have a space machined between the lower unit and the mid. This helps to prevent corrosion at that location. Water will come out there when the motor is running. That flushes the salt out. This may be your case. The gap is only 1/16" or so.

OK there is a crack in the MID toward the front of the unit. From that cract forward a space opens up to about 1/16. The crack is about 3 inches from the forward part of the mid. I can even see a small piece of gravel in the space. Thats where the water is comming out. I didn't start the enging. Nor check the preasure guage. Should the preasure guage work with only the key on or would I need to start the engine to check the guage? I dont know where the water is picked up. If the water is picked up from within the unit itself there may be sufficent water going to the engine and the excess water may simply be running out of the area where the crack is. .

well I decided to put it in the water and run it and watch the engone heat ans waterb preasure guages. The gages bothn stayed in the areas displaing good preasure and no heat. This was the first run since I got the boat and it pourposed pretty bad even though the tilt was down. I decided to increase the speed and it continued to bounce. Finally I decided to raise the tilt while under full power. WOW it hit a sweat spot. Stopped bouncing and picked up an additional 10+ MPH. V KING with 200 mounted about 3+ inches off the transum. This thing is a corvet. I LOVE IT. Thanks for every ones help.
