OK Guys, I am new on here but I got one for ya. I got a 79 Baja 16ss with a Johnson 100hp (#100TLR79S). Went to the lake the 1st Sunday after I got it. The motor ran like a top. The next Sunday we went to the lake and put it in the water and it would not start. Thought the batt was dead. So back to the house we went. Charged the batt and some new plugs and it started. The motor still turned over slow. Now it sometimes wont turn at all. I had the starter checked at a local shop and they told me it's good. I put a new solenoid on and cleaned all the wires. It did the same thing, So I checked and cleaned the batt terminals and the same ): . It wont turn the motor or it turns very slow. It will sometimes turn fast enough to start. Kill the motor and it will fire right back up in like 3 turns or less. Any help you can give me? Thanks and God Bless...

if a shop told you the starter is good and you believe them, you have to look elsewhere for the problem. pull the plugs and turn the motor by hand,if you can turn the motor by hand then the block is eliminated.load test the battery,if it checks out the battery is eliminated, you replaced the solenoid ,only other possibility are the battery cables.run some booster cables from the battery to solenoid and ground see if it cranks,no crank, back to the starter.could be a brush stuck in the holder or a broken brush wire

I also did a load test on the battery. When i changed the plugs I did spin it by hand. I will run some jumpers tomorrow. I did not think of that. If that don't work I think it's got to be the starter ? Thanks...

Do you know how they checked the starter? There are test under a loaded condition and no load. I would bet the starter is bad.
