I don't want the set back. Mostly just to get the LU clear of the ground for trailering. The ease of adjustment is a minor advantage too. Can't trim very much so I need to lift it to clear the ground.
Already have a manual I wanted to remove, not use, but I don't think the trim will be enough to get clearance.
Using this for trailer clearance is out of the question since its too much crap to go through for that.
I like the infinite adjustment of a hydraulic unit too.
What I'm looking for is a slim hydraulic jack that would lower to maybe 1" below the pad on my STV and all the rest of it for raising for running and then trailering. Looking for something that would get the thing high not low.

He has a Land & Sea (one of the very thinnest) for sale at a very reasonable price. It has new bushings in it too.

Yup, Land & Sea is also what I have on my boat. They are only a bit over 4" but one of the most expensive:)

Are they any good? L&S doesn't seem to have a great rep on this board.

At least they aren't claiming a jillion horsepower out of it, and they're still making it. My biggest gripe with them is that they don't seem to care. Seems like they feel this whole performance boating industry is going down in a few years, so they just don't care anymore. Maybe it's been that way for a while, and that's the part of the reason for the bad rap. Anyway, the L&S jackplate is a well made unit, and if you want minimum setback, it's definitely the way to go.

I have had mine on my boat since 1995 and it works great. Back when I picked mine up it only cost $700.00 they have went up a bit since then. One thing I do have to say though, that made me real mad was. I was on vacation and the jack plate was only about 5 months old. It was the first time the boat accually sat in the water over night. Well a seal must have been bad from the factory and the jack plate quit working. They would not stand behind it and charged me $140.00 to fix it and ship it back to me. They said that they dont warranty any race equipment. Even though I just use this thing for skiing. So Rick is completly right, thay dont really care at all. But they do have some nice items.
