They don't call this race Lightning on the Lake for nothing! It struck the first time Saturday night during one hellacious thunder
storm, and again on Sunday during eliminations when OUTBOARD
RACERS won S/E, M/E, AND T/E over some incredibly strong inboard competitors!
The races were "WIDE OPEN" after the storm knocked out all of
MSDBA's timing equipment except their starting system. So everyone had to make a good legal, no foul, start, but at that
point it was WIDE OPEN, NO BREAKOUT RACING!
Shane Phillips/Allison 2001/Merc won S/E against a large field of
racers. Way to go Shane!
Dee Whitesides/STV RR/Merc got R/U.
My friend/neighbor/Rumble Drag King (guess that's better than
drag queen :p) Eric Saloom/Allison 2001/Merc won a very well deserved M/E class:) over some VERY TOUGH jets. I have raced
the guy he beat (Bobby Daniel/Mantra tunnel/Chevy) in the final
round before and he is FAST. Way to go Eric :D !!!!!!!!!!!
Bobby Daniel took R/U.
I won T/E. There were seven boats in the 9 second class, 3 tunnel
jets, three hydros, and my lonely little Quarter Master. One hydro
was a Kurtis 501 with a blown alcohol motor, so things were looking pretty tough for the home team ! Guess who I had to race in the first round? The Kurtis. I think he was as shell shocked as we were when I beat him!!!!!!!!!
So, T/E was me/Mirage Quarter Master/Merc, winner.
Spoiled Rotten Team/Earl Smith Generation 3 tunnel/Chevy, R/U.
This race was held under difficult weather conditions. Saturday was incredibly HOT and windy. Saturday evening it stormed like
HELL . Sunday the wind was dead straight INTO the course.
So tuning and driving were difficult to say the least.
Many thanks to:
Earl Murchison and Family for their true Southern hospitality :).
Troy Lannom (my friend/mechanic/crew chief) for his tireless work
on my and Eric's boats under miserable conditions !
MSDBA for putting on a great race at Beech Lake under very difficult weather conditions. Almost all their equipment got nuked
by the storm. We had bad wind conditions Sunday, and they still managed to put on the show:cool:! This is a great race at a
beautiful site. We're looking forward to racing again next year, hopefully with a little better weather! Way to go Scott and George. By the way Scott Wilson won P/E, and George Loomis was UGF (I think, those inboard classes have funny names), R/U.
I believe (correct me if I'm wrong) that this was the first race where OUTBOARDS won EVERY class that an outboard competed
in :D!
Regards,
Steve;)
PS Eric and I will be getting JPEGS and hopefully MPEGS up on S&F soon.

Here's the 10 second class in the water. You'll recognize Eric S in
the foreground. Look at the competition he had!

Check out Missy's racing bikini! She did a great job on the video
camera, and put up with our BS and terrible weather all weekend.
Missy hates storms. I think it's because she's so little, she thinks
she'll be blown away like Dorothy:eek:!

Steve great to here yall did so well. That rope racing is a different world. We tried our hand at it @ Marble Falls IHBA event. Declared 7.0 sec. class . Had to have a drivers liscense. Burn't piston on dr liscense pass. Could not compete. They said we could run all we wanted to on sunday just for grins. we patched motor & made 2 passes 1@ 8.38 & 129.65 & 1 @ 8.42@ 127.52. tHIS this was after the skeg came off our Steckbaur case & ruined our good prop. Backup gearcase & Piece of **** prop we still turned some heads in the big block world. Just wish we could have qualified & been able to run with some of these guys. Again Congratulations' Look forward to seeing everyone @ Plymouth or Jasper Be safe & keep the dry side dry. Best Regards: Vic:D :) :p

Vic:
As you have found, there is NO EASY racing. This race was very
interesting because it was thrown wide open (no breakout) after
MSDBA's Chrondeks got nuked by a storm. EVERYONE in T/E can
run in the eights somwhere:rolleyes:, and we were just about
to find out WHERE .
I actually thought we would be OK, because I have never used
my second stage or lean burn to qualify. Hell, I thought (right)
we'll just run both stages if necessary and we've got this thing
covered :). That is until we checked it out and found out we had
a bad fuel solenoid on S2 . So, I figured I would just give them Hell at the tree and drive as hard as possible, and it worked
out OK :D!
Some of the inboard guys, particularly the Spoiled Rotten Team,
were very gracious and complimentary of our performance, even
after we beat them. True gentlemen racers. I think we are starting to get at least their attention, if not respect.
Our next race will be Smokin' in the Cove, over near your territory.
I hope we can see you guys there. We also still intend to make
Jasper........I KNOW we'll see you there.
Congrats to you and Marty re Stockton and good luck @ Plymouth!
Kathy, thanks for the kind words! I wish my wife was as excited
about racing as you are! She thinks I'm nuts:rolleyes:............
Regards,
Steve ;)

Guys:
I had the pleasure of meeting Earl's son Lance at the Lexington
race. We had plenty of time to talk because of the weather delays
during the weekend.
Lance is an Emmy nominated videographer who worked for one
of the Memphis, TN network affiliates, and is just a real nice guy
like his father. So, we are working with the best here Greg!
Regards,
Steve
