I recently bought a used 225 Pro Max '98. I don't know that much about the machanics of these motors. The plate on the engine with the serial # said 6500 RPM. I ran it with a Trophy 24 and as I trimmed up the RPM climbed from 6000 to 6700 very rapidly. I immediately backed off! Does this thing have a rev limiter? Any info would be helpful.
Thanks, Marc

if the box is still stock it will have a 6750 rev limiter. what hull are you running it on

What exactly does the motor do when you hit the limiter? When I saw the tach near 6700, I backed off and slowed way down. Then the motor shut off on it's own. I waited for 30 seconds or so, fired it back up and it ran really strange and shut down again. I waited for another 30 seconds or so, fired it back up and she ran fine for about 20 minutes at moderate speeds, then I took it home.

you may need a 26 pitch prop. i have zero experience with that hull but i'm sure there are plenty on here that do. may need to play with your setup like engine height and setback. where are you currently with height and setback

I have a 14" rapid jack and it's set about 2" below the pad ( V in my case). If I knew how to put pictures on here I would.

the motor just hits a wall. shouldn't have any funny characteristics when it comes back down

Well, it is a '98 and I bought it 3 weeks ago, so......Who knows? I am looking for a 26 Trophy, hoping that that will solve the problem.

i own a 225 ProMAX It recently was torn down for a total rebuild i replaced it with a 260 I cant tell you how many times i set this mota on 7000 right out of the factory ( i bought it new ) It has a 6750 rev limiter which does not seem to work with smaller props 23/24 and it has never shut off when over taxed so im not familar with what your dealing with it just keeps on running it is a A6 whats your ecu number A17 or ?

Just curious. Did you just ease back when you say you "backed off and slowed way down" or did you chop the throttle? Another question... what does your battery voltage look like when you are running?

I would say that I pulled back to around half throttle in about a milisecond.

The battery voltage runs at around 13 volts.

at 6700 or so there is a pretty good bit of fuel going into the motor. if you chopped the throttle that quick and therefore cut off the air supply maybe the motor was just loaded up with fuel. i've never chopped the throttle that quick at those rpm's so i can't speak from experience.

Sounds kinda like me "got to fat coughs spits and sputters & some times have to lay down, so I can get going again"...:D

:thumbsup:that was the technical term that i was looking for just couldn't find it. :D
hey hemi. have you ran the motor since. you said it was hard to start and it coughed and sputtered. after letting it sit it ran ok and you took it home. that all sounds like the motor was just flooded

I've run it on the hose and it seems to be ok.

That's kind of what I was thinking with my initial question.;)
