View Full Version : Speed effecient hulls?

What would you consider the most effecient hulls around, the ones that flat out roll with the least amount of power? I always thought this would go to a Skater.
My brother was interested in looking for a boat trying/wanting to stay with a single engine. So, lets say you were going to put in one 500+ cubic inch engine and maybe also other boats that run an outboard.
River running probably, but maybe a liitle bit of ocean running up and down the beach.
Though this may be two different boats its ok. He's considering options at this point.
Hot points for him would be looks. He doesnt mind buying an older boat if it still looked baddass and modern. He wants to hull between 4or 5 people. He would like it to run atleast 80. But, 90-100 woould be better... He loves the wine of a blower as well...

Most efficient for the least HP, my vote has to be an Allison
Rick
i think you are probably talking two different hulls since most of what we run (small light outboards) are extremely efficient but not the best in the chop. Having said that, an action would do both waters (not huge chop though), but the efficiency drops and you are talking in the 80 mph range. The most efficient of what we run would be an allison, mirage, stv, or quarter shot. if he wants 4-5 people, the stv euro is hard to beat in the looks department, very efficient, seats 4, and will do low to mid 90's with a 200, triple digits with anything above that. The euro is not a great rough water boat though. The allison ( i think its called a grand sport) also is extremely effigient, fast, has the seating, and looks like a million bucks. again, not the best for rough water.
he should also get in touch with wildman; his 21 liberator can be rigged with twins or single and can take the chop better than anything i mentioned above (not to mention they get an A++++ in the looks department when he gets done with them). I rode in one with twins and did 114 with a rev limited engine, holding a beer in one hand and shooting pics with the other- felt like i was on rails. he is now rigging them with the 300xs' and they are fast and fuel efficient.
anyway, just my $.02, there should be lots of opinions and this thread could get interesting.

It is hard to beat the Allison Grandsport, seating for five, storage for anything you can think of and has a retractable ski pylon [optional].
I run fast in some very rough water, but probably most would not do it.
It is also the only hull that you can bat-turn without a trip to the ER.
The Mod VPs are easier to drive fast.

:iagree: The Allison GS, in my opinion, is one of the best looking boats out there with the performance to back it up and the seating to take a few extras with you. The suggestion to talk to Randy (Wildman) about his boats is also excellent. If money is no object then his 30' is amazing! Great looking boat with space comfort and the looks to boot! Goodluck

Hydrostream Venom. 90 mph on GPS, with a 175. That is effient. The same pad design is used in larger offshore fishing boats.

wheres the video :confused:You can't take a video from inside the boat, the G force will take sunglasses off your face [lost several] and a camera would "launch". A friend took a video in Lake Crystal [from the shore] of several good bat turns with the boat full of teenagers but never gave me a copy.
Kevin Mac took several good still photos of bat-turns at the Radical Boat Reunion [see my avitar].
I recently have slacked off on doing them, the G force on my shoulder against the side of the cockpit gives me a huge blood blister and my shoulder is sore for weeks.

My 29' Vlocity VR1 ran about 84 mph with a 500hp. No ventilation,No trim tabs,No super charger or blower. Putting 600 hp in it next week. Ill post the results.I think its going to take time to dial it in though.

Tuff 28, 95.5 mph with a 525 EFI
In a smaller size, you could not go wrong with an SS2000. John Tiger tested on at over 80 mph with a 115.

what fish said, all of the small outboard boats are extremely efficient, but not good in rough water. i am not sure what rough water is considered to most of the people on this site, but we run a 21 skater, and i doubt any of the smaller boats mentioned could run in half of what we do. we used to run with a hydrostream venom at times. on weekends, he is parked, even the liberators, dcb or eliminators, smaller ones like 21 ft don't compare to the skater in rough water. with single 500 hp motor, phantom is pretty efficient, and very good in rough water. outboard route, skater in rougher water is good and will do over 100 with a 280 or 300. but in glass, the skater has the porpoise and is not as fun as the boats mentioned before.

I agree with timeless... you don't want one of the smaller tunnels if you're going in the ocean. Does he want to "seat" 4-5 people or carry them, their gear and be comfortable? If so, I think we're talking about a bigger boat that most of those being mentioned. I can seat 5 but they better stay seated because there isn't much room to move!:p A 500+ inch engine in anything under 25' is going to put you in the 80+ range easily. Outboards, I would stay with a tunnel if he wants to go fast.

Ocean he better be at least 24 feet cat with a true tunnel. Thats still small. Hell a 28 Skater is small in the ocean. I dont take mine in the Chesapeake Bay because its too rough. I guess we all have our own thoughts about rough water and what is actually comfortable.

how rough does the chesapeake get? we used to run a 28. as you said everyone has different ideas of rough water.
