What were the best years for them?
Are the 1998,99 good motors?
A17-A32? Mercury tells me it is just a # change but are the same boxes.

1997 was the best year. The 98s, 99s, and 00s were the years they recalled due to being too lean in the midrange. The recalled intaled reprogramming the ECU, retarding the timing, 89 to 91 octane, changed the plugs to colder BUZHW.

Chad, Thanks for the info.
The funny thing I gave Mercury the serial # they said it was a 1998 and it never had any kind of recall. Not sure I trust them. They did say that it is 11 years old and if it was going to have an issue it would of happen by now :eek:

I can see it has never been touched.
I plan on rebuilding with top pinned pistons.

I'm also looking for one more powerhead and would like to pick good years.
Please keep the info and feedback coming.
