hey guys, looking at a 135 johnson, guy is unsure about the year, but the motor has no trim. My question is, what trim is a direct bolt onto a 135? are all clamps/mounts for johnnyrudes the same? for V4s? will anytrim from such as a 90 or 115 bolt on? thanks guys

Power trim/tilt for V4 engines was produced from the 73 through the 76 model year. It mounted outside the transom brackets. A wide lift bracket was bolted to the midsection and spanned the rear of the engine to the two hydraulic pistons. This unit has not been produced for many years, so some parts for the system are getting hard to find. Sometimes this unit was confused with the power tilt kit which was not able to trim the engine when under power. The more modern tilt/trim system debuted on the 77 models. It is not a direct bolt-on to an older model.

Ok thanks. The motors original colour is white, what year did omc start making them white? werent they green in the early years? Also, can the 135 be bolted to a 115 mid? same bolt pattern on some years is it not? thanks for the help

A 135 will bolt to a 115 mid, as long as it is the same generation as the 135. The configurations of the water passages changed in later years, so you need to check.

You'll have to check through some some parts lists. Look for the powerhead base gasket. Check it's congifuration. They decide what will fit and what won't. You can go through the parts lists at epc.brp.com. I think you will find the change is between 76 and 77, when they went to double thermostats.

The 135 won't bolt up to the 1980's 115 adaptor plate. The Lower unit shifting will be different between the older 135 and 1980's stuff. If you are gonna use all the 135 stuff, powerhead, mid and lower you can retro fit the trim unit from the 1980's mid by taking out the steering stem and using the 135 steering stem which is a little smaller in diameter, then make up the difference with some bushings. Here's some pics in this thread.
