I have a 1970 115hp in-line 6 direct charge outboard. There are 3 wires that come from the switchbox that go into the distributor(dissy). One of the wires is broken right at the dissy housing. The dissy is out of the motor. I pulled the shaft and rotor out. Above the rotor disc is some rubber that goes half-way around the diisy housing. The wires are in there. Questions, what is the function of the rubber(insulator? Can the rubber be pulled out and used again? If I could get the rubber out I could replace the wires and put the rubber back in. Can I use RTV or form- a- gasket or something similar when puting the dissy back together again? Last question, how would you fix this wire problem? These wires sure do like to rot after 39 years. Thx in advance for the help!!!!!!

The "rubber" was originally a hard epoxy compound that has softened over the years. The only people I know that ever had a way to remove it without destroying everthing was Rapair. I don't think you will be able to replace the wires without damaging the electronic components in the trigger assembly.

You will have to buy a new "trigger" assembly from CDI (new name Rapair uses) or find a used distributor on eBay

ok, so the three wires will already be in my new trigger assembly (they will be hanging out) and then all I need to do is just screw them 3 to the switchbox. Where did you say to get 1 from. I was a little unclear on that. Buy from I-boats or old mercs?

Well CDi electronics only quoted me a suggested retail price. Won't sell to the average man. Have to be a distributor with a tax I.D. , lovely. I guess I just have to pay retail (which is ok if I have to) from old mercs or I-boats or Crowley unless someone has a better idea. To any 1 interested I do have a blown 950 1967 Mercury for parts. Number 1 decided to fly out. Bet it has a good trigger which I can't use. LOL. Any suggestions welcome.

You are probably right, the 1966-69 Merc electronic distributor used the same distributor cap as Merc used on the old battery point ignition ... fatter than the distributor on your 1970. I'm not real sure on the serial number cut off on the point ignition and the trigger ignition ... it could have been during 1967, so I'm not 100% certain which your solid state ignition motor would have.
You might get lucky and find someone who would trade. If I were you, I would keep the 950 ignition module as a spare.

It's kinda funny Mark75H, I am originally from Annapolis , Missouri, population 320. I thought alot of that 950 would transfer over to the 1150. Of course the part I need LOL.

The powerheads are almost completely different, below the powerhead they are essentially the same except for the gear ratio. The 1970 uses the peculiar 1.78:1 ratio, the 67 uses the more common 2:1 ratio.
