I have a 20' open bow ski boat (ultra) with a 89 200 GT motor on it right now. the motor runs great but it has about 400 hours and gets cranky, hard to start, hard on gas ect. but it absolutley screams for a stock motor w/ VRO.
I am looking at replacing it with a EFI motor, maybe carbed but it must be newer. I'm also not rich enough to make payments on a toy that gets used about 50 hours a year.
What are my best bets for reliable power that I can find used without beaking the bank? I am not loyal to any manufacturer, just looking for turn key reliability that I would feel comforable letting anyone borrow without problems.

thanks for the help, do the mercury 2.5's have as much torque as the 2.7 ? I'm just saying that my hull is kind of heavy for its lenght.
I am leaning towards a mercury thou because I see them the most used. I would have to change my hydraulic steering at an extra expense (that sucks)
how many hours are considered to many for a lake/river boat ? I would want a stock motor that can sustain high speed for resonable amounts of time without having to modify it from stock if possible. My 200gt currrently turns a 23P shooter @ 6200 w/ stock VRO and have had no problems ( like meltdowns ) but it is a finiky motor otherwise.
Are the earlier FICHT motors anygood? I have a friend with a yamaha and he loves it but they need all of their own guages and controls for the specific motor? It may be hard to find the complete package used.
