View Full Version : What do you guys think about this Boston Whaler purchase?

I am looking at a 1972 Boston Whaler (Sport?) 13'.

I am fine with going thru a 2 stroke O/B, but not the boat.

If it was a Checkmate, I would know what to look for, but I am not real experienced with this particular boat...

So is there anything in particular to look for?

There are many fine stress cracks where the inner liner/deck meets the hull, but nothing real "opened up". (sorry no pics)

The transom has a pretty serious aluminum brace plate (inside and outside then thru bolted). This was def. professionally done and looks good. The owner said it was just a precaution to accommodate for a 20" motor, but there are some stress cracks visible at the transom and there may be more to the story.

With a little negotiation, the price will be right. I didn't pull the trigger because I wanted some input from S&F.

What do you all think?

Thanks in advance for the help.

one of the things to look for is a split seam at the transom where the top cap is fused at the hull.
continuous wave and whaler central are good whaler sites although some people say the guy who runs cw is a gustapo:D

buy the way I like that cm you have for sale. my wife would kill me though

I'm not an expert, but i don't think anyone in their right mind is going to put a transom brace like that only for "precaution" figure on doing the transom, if you end up buying it.

That was my original thought as well, but then he stated that he needed it to get the motor higher (the plate is taller than the top lip of the transom) because the boat is made for a 15" motor and he has a 20".

Could that possibly be fact?

The older 13' whalers were indeed designed for a 15" motor, I grew up with a couple thru the years. As long as it wasn't overpowered, the transom should be ok - the next step would be to tie the transom to the inner splashdivider, that was pretty normal for the guys who would put 50 and 70hp motors on them.

If you have access to a few bathroom scales, I would try and weigh the bare hull, or get hold of a moisture meter, so you can know if you are getting a decent hull or a waterlogged mess.

On the older ones, you definitly need to check for moisture, and not just in the transom. If the hull has had any cracks, that foam will suck up water and really weigh it down. Me and my brother had one growing up and loved it (1969 model I think) , but it was definitly water logged, and my father was flipping it and cutting out some piece of the outer shell and refiberglassing it every year.

Thanks guys.

It has a 1999 40HP Force (Mercury) on it that is in GREAT condition. He bought it from a friend that never used it. The powerhead looks as clean as my new motor.

What do you think that 40hp Force is worth? That makes a difference if I can get the boat and motor for the value of the motor.

Ya know.

This is TRUE! that trasom plate is the tell tale! Also mercury( Brunswick corp) adpoted the force line when it acuired bayliner i belive as of this year they have dropped the force line up!I have seen more force outboards in the junk yard than on boats.jmo

Yep, wish you were closer....some things aren't meant to be...

I think I have about pulled the plug on this idea, several responses and not a one suggesting it is worth anything.
