:cheers:They are two completely different animals. The 280 is a high revving, hard accelerating, loud growling beast that will drink gas like and need to be rebuilt ever 100 hours or so. It's really a race engine.
The 250XS is a smooth running, quiet idling, gas sipping yet very complex motor. They have been extremely reliable and overall good peformers. They have excellent bottom end, decent midrange acceleration and enough power on top to pull big props. As a 3L it is about 100lbs heavier than a 2.5 280.
It all comes down to what hull you have and what you want to do. If you want a hassle free motor that is miserly on gas and is good overall performer get the Opti. The ProXS comes with a 5 year warranty which can't be beat.
If top performance is your goal and you want to own the lake and don't care about the added costs of gas, oil and rebuilds then go with the 280.
Remember again some hulls won't handle well with the weight of the big block and other bigger hulls need the torque of the 3L to run well.
For what it's worth.

Bec, if you have a lighter boat, check out the 280. If its a heavier hull a 3.0L would work better.

and how many 280s have you owned?
THANKS GUYS FOR THE INFO .I HAVE A 20 XD BULLET WITH A 280 ON IT NOW AND LOVE THE HARD HITTING ACCELERATION .NOT TO CRAZY BOUT THE IDLE QUALITY AND THE MAINTENENCE ON IT.BUT I GUESS OWNING A ENGINE FOR SIX YEARS AND NOT HAVING TO GO INTERNAL ISNT TOO BAD.I WAS JUST THINKING OUT LOUD WITH THE GAS PRICES GOING BACK UP AND THE MINIMUM OCTANE THE 250 XS WILL TAKE.BUT TO TELL YOU THE TRUTH JUST OUT OF HABIT I PROBABLY WOULD RUN HIGH OCTANE ON THE 250 XS:D.JUST TURNED 105 HOURS ON THE 280 WITH 2 TO 3 % LEAKDOWN.I HAVE OWNED THIS ENGINE FOR SIX YEARS AND KNOCK ON WOOD IT HAS BEEN GOOD TO ME.OF COURSE I GUESS IF YOU MANTAIN THEM PROPERLY THEY ARE GOING TO LIVE. .THANKS AGAIN GUYS FOR THE INPUT:thumbsup:

whats wrong with the idle? it should idle around 800 in or out of gear, if it doesnt then there may be an issue somewhere. what plugs are you running?
Idles fine out of gear. Put it in gear and seems to idle rough reverse doesnt seem to do it as bad 900 rpms.tps set .80 butterfly seems to be finicky when you try to set it .got it set with a slight drag at .005 .anything past it it will idle up high and not come down quick enough when you first start it up.
