Is it a relatively easy swap on a 40amp charging system to swap from the big single voltage regulator to the later model twins? I would guess the stator needs to be changed out or can I get away with the older style?

I did it a couple years ago. I bought a CDI dual kit. And yes I also had to buy a 4 wire stator. They state in the kit that using the old two wire will cause damage.

Buddy took it apart last night and it IS the twin style (I kind of knew it was) and one of em was smoked. So now I just need to track down a new pair.

Is this the earlier water cooled style?

nope. 1994, square non-water cooled boxes.

Wanted to ask first. If it was the water cooled style I could have probably helped you with a like new slightly used pair.
