I used Marine-Tex and this is the final product. I let it set over night. I then sanded it with a sand paper disc and drill that is older than I am.

I'm not sure the marine tex will hold long term. I would put two pop rivets through it sealed the heads and sanded them down.

I've done that a few times, (with titanium puddy) and it worked fine!
I have even used it to add some more to a rivit on tab.

In the past 4 years how many times has it been in the water? You are as bad as Greg. Did the 280 ever get out of break in?:p

the boat that has that tab on it has more hours on it than all of your boats put together. Lay off the sheep f'n and you might get some seat time.
Now that we have that out of the way, can all the other guys take the BS comments to the lounge where they belong? kthxbye.

Since all you kids are gettin along today.....
I just made one from carbon fiber and west epoxy, I expect it to stay on for 20 years, or at least as long as the skeg does:eek:
Anybody done any research into the ideal shape for the trailing edge? I'm squaring mine off for now.

but the skeg you put it on sure looks like it needs more than just a torque tab.

Agree with Tiger! :D
Sure it could last decades or it could come off on the first high speed run. No sweat off my back. You can put a couple of pop rivets in it for less than 50cents, seal it up and it WILL be stronger. Or not, who cares. Advice is free. What you do with it sometimes ain't. :smiletest:

For as often as your boat's in the water I'm sure a little chewing gum would've lasted 4 years. :p :p :D :D :D

It will hold on a SLOMC! ;)
Everyone was telling me that the rivits wouldn't hold on my rivit on tab by themselves. I was told to epoxy it on too along with the rivits. And no, I never epoxied it on, and it never came off. :)

dont weld on a skeg, they like to crack right at the top of the tab. even though the weld is strong, the heat weakens the cast aluminum. it might not crack at all (and there are alot welded on out there) but there is a much better way to get a tq tab done.
So they like to crack or it might not crack.... make up your mind! ;)
I got two weld ons. No cracks yet.

Huh? You say "they like to crack"... so how can an inanimate object have actions and feelings?

Not sure, but I sent my lower unit for counseling, and it's been much better since:D Some things we just have to accept:leaving:
they last until you hit bottom, then parts of them like to fall off

RLC PE sells them for $10.00 delivered. Brand new with rivits cant get any cheaper than that. OK unless you make your own out of marine tex:D. Now that I think of it a little can of marine tex is more than ten bucks:eek:

I've been told about that trick but never seen it done. Looks pretty slick. I would think it would hold up well, unless you install it on my crawfish skiff:D:D:thumbsup:

You put it on the wrong side
Just kidding :D
Looks good, it should hold so lng as no corrosion gets under it or no water cacthes under it and blows it off..... at this point, the prep and paint is very important to keep the water out.
Anybody done any research into the ideal shape for the trailing edge? I'm squaring mine off for now.
The shape of the trailing edge is important. It needs a square lip like the trailing edge on your boat. The 45 degree angle will probably not work as well as a flat, squared-off edge. I would recommend filling it some more, you want the profile to be a right triangle.
