How does one tell the difference externally between a 2.4 Bridgeport, 2.4 oval port and 2.5?
This comes from an OMC guy that knows nothing about V6 Mercs.

You might be able to run the serial no. by a merc. dealer and find out what you have...

Just asking for my own personal knowledge. Is there a quick method for ID on these other than running numbers of pulling a plug and looking?

Well, you can tell the difference between the 2.4's and 2.5's by looking at the block from the side. The cylinder walls on a 2.4 have "bumps" or "hills" on them, whereas the 2.5 cylinder walls are straight tubes.

Ok that is the kind of info I am looking for. Now, how do you tell an oval port from a bridgeport 2.4
Thanks

Other than running the numbers and blocks being unpainted, I don't think there is a difference visually. If there is, I have never heard of it. After reading this I looked at a BP block I have and an oval port I have and other than one being painted on the outside and one not,I can't see a difference. Just my.02 .

Well...all the Bridgeport motors came from the factory as unpainted blocks. However, so did the carbed HP motors...which some, if not all, were oval ported also. I wasn't aware of any oval ported painted blocks that came from Merc...which in no way means they don't exist. I'm no expert by any means.
I think the only reliable ways to tell the difference between oval ported motors and BP's are 1)Serial number and a phone call or 2)start unbolting.

the only 2.4 oval ports that I have seen unpainted were the modvp blocks.

I bought a MOD VP motor new back in 1986 and it was a Bridgeport carb. First motor I had on my Stream. I think after that year they changed the rules in MOD VP class and Merc changed the porting????
I have no idea how you tell the difference?

Ok another question, What year were the bridgeports first introduced to the public?

Well, I believe the actual horned motor BP's were first introduced in 1987??? There was a predecessor to it called an "updraft" efi motor, which came out in 82-83ish, but I don't think they actually had the bridged ports???

2.5s are behind the liner 2.4s :nonod: bosses in the block are easiest way to tell. i thought the bridge port was a high perf motor and not painted like a 260/280 but this is another OMC guy guessing :D

beings that paint is easily applied,i wouldnt necessarily rule out a painted block as not being a bridgeport.especially since those motors have been around and most likely rebuilt in the last 20 years.click on the link frenchphil pasted, and view the photos he posted on the previous thread of the 2 different engines.

So what was the first year of the bridgeport 2.4?

Carb and EFI High performance both were bridgeports.1987 was Chrome bore and 1988 and later went to nicasil. Mod Vp carb and some EFI came factory with Alum Flywheels. Production carb motors are oval ports and are factory painted.
Prior to 1987 Carb and Formula EFI are oval ports.
Haven't been around the 2.4 stuff for a while so I hope memory serves me correct. If not I am sure someone on here will let us all know.

That link shows you the difference between a 2.4 and a 2.5,not the difference between a 2.4 Bridgeport and a regular 2.4 . There are no differences on the outside between a Bp and a regular 2.4. Bridgeports and Mod VP's came unpainted and regular fishing mota 2.4's were painted as we all know. Other than that ,no distinguishable difference. But as you said just because it is painted doesn't mean it is not a BP. My bridgeport block is painted the same color blue as the Mercury racing plug wires.

3-4 lbs. is pretty much what a merc carb can handle. You just have to make sure you flow enough fuel for you bridgeport. Is your stock fuel pump not functioning properly?
