I'm thinking about buying a Scat Cat. What's the most H.P. they'll take before they get unpredictable? What speeds are they capable of? What will the bottom and transom take?

That was my first boat, i had a 89' Comp ScatCat... i started out with a 30hp Evinrude that ran 37mph, then upgraded to a 50hp Evinrude with PT/T and ran 45-47ish... that was runnin a 21 Alum prop though, cold have done better with a different prop. The guy i bought it from had a inline 4 Merc 60 or 70 and claimed in ran in the mid 60's.
I think the weight on the transom is the deciding factor on how much power that it can handle... Once you get over 200lbs (bolted right on the transom) they start sitting low. Id guess 250lbs worth of motor bolted right to the transom would be the most it would take and still have enough freeboard to be some what '"Safe". I've heard guys claim they've run over 70 in these boats...

We used to race these back in our club days down here in Miami... They would run a tick over 60 with a 50 yami and alot of prop work by either Jeff Titus or Dave Dewald
