I got another one guys.. I need to lift my 88 Johnson 175 to get a jack plate in. How would i go about hooking it up to a lift? I don't see any points where I can really hook it, which makes me think I need some sort of special adapter..

I dug this thing up.. http://shorts-marine-inc.amazonwebstore.com/Johnson-Evinrude-BRP-Lifting-Eye-For/M/B001KYDP6G.htm?traffic_src=froogle&utm_medium=organic&utm_source=froogle
Is this the going rate for a puller/lifting eye? I bought pullers before but they never were that expensive.

What do you guys think of rigging up a nice piece of steel to the three bolt holes in the flywheel, and then lifting from that? Is that too crazy?

That sounds a little high. All you really need is a puller, then buy a lifting eye for it.

Yea, that's what I was thinking. Any idea where I can find a puller/eye at a more reasonable price?

get one of these...

and one of these...

the puller hole is 5/8" i believe, just put the eyebolt through with a nut and washer.

also, any hardware store will have these, this is just for illustration.
hope this helps

I have a puller set just like that. So I'm assuming that I can lift the whole engine by the three bolts that would thread into the flywheel? I thought they might not handle the weight, and I had to thread into the crank, hence the special tool.

Back before I had tools I got creative with ratchet straps, a comealong, and the steel beam over my parents garage door to install a Johnson 150 V6 onto my old CVX-16.

Well in my case it will be a comealong and a sturdy tree branch over my driveway:eek:

Greg, I appreciate the offer and you're only about 100 miles away(Milford, PA), but the boat is no shape to travel at the moment. I'm in the middle of a rather big overhaul. Floor, stringers, paint, and interior.. I might hold off with the jackplate for now, and perhaps take you up on your offer in a few weeks.

Stroker, appreciate the info. Will be useful further down the line. This is my first outboard, but it won't be the last for sure.

2 strong friends. one on each side.. trim the motor down, raise the trailer tongue and put a 2x4 under the scag. ease the trailer forward. bolt on the jack plate. I did this with my 200. -no problem.

Just make sure the bolts have proper thread engagement (screws down far enough, :p plus they are fine thread to boot)

And if you can get an screw in eye, screw it in until it binds the puller. It will lift a V8 Rude at that point. :)

I just uploaded this. Pure BRP parts. The puller set was not that badly priced, but the eye was.

Good luck! :)

I took and bought a shackle and a case hardened bolt and welded the shackle to the head of the bolt. Found a shackle that the bolt head fit in between the shacle legs. Been using it for years.

Has a stuck mercury the other day (bolt fits the merc crank tool also) and had the mid chained to the leg of my 14' boom and using a 2 ton chain hoist pulling against each other. Pulled the threads out of the block and studs are still in the midsection!!!!! If it didn't break then, It sure isn't going to break just lifting a engine. Just a thought!!!
