Bought a 1990 Champion with 1991 Mercury 150 when I returned from Iraq last year. Ran twice before cold weather set in, all was fine. This year went out, hard to get in gear once in gear pops out upon acceleration. Mercury motor manual doesn't cover rigging very well. Need help don't want to tear up LU.

Thanks in advance

Have you checked the condition of the gear oil yet? You are looking for water and metal shavings. This would be the first step.

Make sure the clamp that holds the shift cable in the engine didn't pop open.

Could be misadjusted shift cable under the cowl - sounds like it might be too many turns on the adjustment barrel towards reverse. With the engine in neutral, remove the shift cable fro the cable slide and see where the unattached cable ends up when the control box is in neutral. Readjust the cable barrel under the cowl until the "Neutrals" line up and put the cable back on the shift slide. Check for excess slack in the cable also, pull out on the unattached cable end and then push in on it - this is called "lost motion" and you need to find the center point of the slack when you reattach the cable. Hope this helps.

Thanks all, I got another set of eye's looking while I was moving controls and found 1. cables were moving in standoff clamp, 2. control quadrant has slack form age, 3 quadrant never been lubed. All the above conditions added to 1/2 - 3/4 inch slack in cable and travel at control arm. Leaving tomorrow for Vermont to train Soldiers will replace next week.

Thanks for the technical talk.

Did you have problems with it last year? Hope it turns out to be an easy fix. If you're in town the week of June 13th you should come down and join us. We are only and hour or so down the road. Lost of boats and a good time.
