I use BLUE on the 10/32 screws that attach the reeds to the cage ( I find red applied to these will result in stripped heads and or pulled threads) I do use RED on the 1/4 X 20 two attachment screws that join the cage to the reed plate . I also use 1/4" drive ratchet and after the cage contacts the new gasket I only go 1/4 turn more. Too much pressure WILL crack cage ends , been there and done it... Just had a motor yesterday that 75% of the heads were stripped ( torx scoket ) and I had to use a MAPP torch to burn and shrink the reed material and loosen the RED lock tite so they could be removed.. Pain in the keester and I don't think is safe breathing those fumes off the reed material.. Stinks up the machine shop area ( 2500 square feet ) for days..And will even drift up in the house through the ceiling and then through the floor , pisses the lady of the house off too..

Good luck,
Doug

Gotta be carefull with the term red Loctite. There is more than one red. I use 271 on anything 1/4" and up. 242, blue, on bolts ands screws under 1/4". Never use 262, which is also red, unless you understand the meaning of permanent. Mercury recommends 271 on most applications.

Bellzona Mollecular. They can be tough. I like using an impact driver, very lightly, to break em loose.

Great info about attaching Reed Cages, as I'm also doing that now! BTW, my garage is NOT
attached to the house, for reasons you've noted (read: the Lady!)

Thanks,
Dave

there is more than one loctite red? GD it, why must everything be so complicated? I thought the whole point of different colors was to quickly tell the difference between the strengths.

Mercury specified a "Grade A" red with a part number, used for con rod bolts, installing seals, etc. in their service manuals.

loctite green 620 is meant for retaining gears, bearings, pullies, etc. not so much a threadlocker most generally red is a permanent only removable with heat (If applied correctly). Blue is removable without heat.

Does somebody know the torque rates for the reed screws?
I'm a bit afraid to overtighten them...

And a loctite question: how much loctite do you guys use on a bolt? (I think I use too much:rolleyes:)

all loctite brand containers are red unless you buy the little tubes

In ancient times (when I drove fast), the containers were the color of the product:(
