Would you buy a new Allison (say XB-2002) if you knew the warranty would be considered void if you put a larger than recommended hosepower motor on the boat, say a 175 H/P or more. I think the maximum recommended is a 150 H/P,

Up to you if you want to purposely over power your boat and accept responsibility of potential damage. It's not Allison's responsibility to honor a warranty on a boat that may have up to or over double it's recommended power installed on it.

I would only buy a New Allison , if I where filthy rich .
As for the Warranty , It wouldn't be a concern . My '89 xb02 doesn't have the first stress mark in it . There is not a better built boat on the market .

Personelly I havent heard of very many problems with Allisons. One of the few boats that you hardly ever hear of a problem. I havent been around them forever but, I frequent lots of other boards and never read about problems from workmanship or damage from over powered motors. Dont think Darris has very many warrenty issues with his boats weather there over powered or not.

If I planned to over power it and void the warranty I would not buy a new boat, I would find a used one.
I've never really heard of any allison's having problems though, so I wouldnt be overly concerned.

Arent most our Boats over rated??????20ft+ boat no coast guard rating but their still is a Manufacters rating......Their was an incident on our lake a few years back, motor came off the back of the allison, threw someone from the boat while making a turn.....The person was killed....I dont know the details on the legal stuff besides allison called it a (pullthrew) and not a Transom failure...so because of that they were not responsible.....maybe it was improper rigging, like I said I have no clue.....How do warranties work and who's to Blame when something like this happens, when someone is killed and dealer didnt rig the motor????I'm not one to point he finger and play the Blame game but to what point is the Boat Builder responsible????I personally would never purchase an Allison, but the warranty or that accident has nothing to do with my reasons why:cheers:
The same thing happened to my new Grand Sport powered with a 2.5 225 Pro Max back in 1998 & Allison covered it . Scott

You make good points. Was the aforementioned allison over powered do you know? If so Allison had no responsibility at all IMO. If it was not rigged at an Allison Dealer (approved) then again, no responsibility. How old was the boat? A lot of unanswered questions.
At some point we have to take into consideration what we do to our boats and what amount of abuse should be covered under warranty.

The way I see it is the only person responsible should be the person operating, who knows maybe he wasnt doing his preflight checks before riding,
But also workmanship has to be considered to some point...
I agree with the two statements above. You must be responsible for your own actions and the manufacturer should stand behind their product.
obviously allison does, up to a certain HP, which is well within their rights to do so.

I do Intensive-Destructive-Testing of my A-boat every summer and so far it only has a few recurring cracks.

If I had the money I would buy one tomarow without any concern. I have a 99 SSr very light layup with a mod 260 that has been run hard in fairly ruff water and have yet to see a stress crack.

All new grandsports have larger dia. top mounting bolts with a backing plate on the inside of the boat. All older grandsports should and need to be the done. You can get the kit from Allison. My understanding on the larger motor vs. the point of the no warranty from the factory is partly to do with the 3 liter motors...the lower units do not ratchet, like a 2.5 motor. Plenty of people running 3 liters on the back of a Allison with no problems.

You can say that again.
If anyone was to ever question the strength, durability and overall build quality on an Allison, JR's GS is a testament to how well they are built. :iagree:

Yes, if I had the cash, lol. You can hardly fault Allison for putting a disclaimer on their boats in a sue-happy country like the US.

Absolutely I would buy a new one tomorrow if I had the cash. I love my Grandsport, I bought mine used and it looks like it just came off the showroom floor.
