View Full Version : Glen Reynolds 129mph Allison Video

Brian Harden
03-11-2009, 07:01 AM
OK, here it is. This is the 1987 NOA speed trial run of Glenn Reynolds when he set the 129mph V-bottom record. Keep in mind this was 22 years ago and there were no 2.5s, fuel injection, or 15" mids being used. This was done with a 2.4, carbs, and a 20" mid. Who knows what that boat would run with today's power levels and a 12 or 15 inch mid.

Also, for everyone who has asked me about a copy of the full video, I am working on it now and will let everyone know when I am finished:thumbsup:

I think if you take the overall speed of that run, divide it by the length, multiply it by the pounds per inch of force on the water and then add 225 you will get the equivlent of Ronnie in the Viper !!:D

The great thing about Glen was that he could also turn left. Watched him many times running this same boat at the NOA round de rounds. Other people got more publicity for being a great V driver but in my humble opinion not many were better than Glen in a big V. Also one of the nice guys.

how much horsepower would you guess glen was making. we can assume his setup was perfect so how much horsepower does it take, with a perfect setup, to go 130.

The first pass in the video when Glenn is coming from the left side of the screen to the right there is a guy in a red hat. That is Junior Eaves. He built that motor and stood there and watched it go by like you or I would watch a bus going down the street. That was Junior and he was the man.

Still have my Allison jacket but it only fits my 16 yr old daughter . Wifey must have washed it in hot water .:D:D That 25 bote had a one off bottom that was mostly glens creation . When he tore that bote up mod-vp racin they used that bote as the plug for the xr-2001. I went up there seems like in 1989 and Darris had it all screwed and patched together gettin ready to make a plug for the new bote. Ahh the memories .

I would guess, Hoss triton

that would be my guess to. i am curious to know approximate horsepower of the engine. for all those people that write off 2.4's as old stuff that won't make the big power let this one be a lesson for you:D. glen no doubt had the setup perfect but it still takes some pretty big power to run 133 in an allison. for those that don't know, i think the eaves' were the ones that cut the 2.5 to the drag motor that mercury later built

I just bought a 2.4 200 that made around 300 HP on race gas.

I'm gonna de-tune it and use it for a play motor on pump gas.

I have never owned a 2.5, but have driven a few 260's, 280's and 300's, I can't wait to see what the 2.4 will do on pump gas.

120.9 MPH, 18/07/1987, Lake Munmorah in Bullet One but I think that was a 16 footer, 12" mid, #4, someone may correct me. Glenns A boat was 4 foot longer and an open cockpit.

If i rember the prop was a thru hub round ear clever that Glan worked. The gear case came from South Carolina small one, no not Taylor gears he new nothing about gear cases or gears back then. There was only one handful of people that new. Glen ran over 130 on one run. That was fun fun back then. My first mod motor Eaves did. Great Job. Glen, as for H.P. 250 or 275..

Tim Hackney at Performance Propellers in Soddy-Daisy, Tn. He went with Glenn to most of the races.

03-14-2009, 08:39 AM
I saw the prop, in a ragged box on top of an old frigidaire, through-hub, kinda reminded me of an old inline six round ear you would see on an old fishing boat (with a little more length to the blades) small diameter though. Heck, i even got to see an old land&sea 12 barrell carb set-up.
I would like to state for the record, I learned more from Glen during the 6 yrs of racing with him than i ever learned about fastboats from all others combined. I look back on that period in my life that I raced with his coaching and It is all memories that I will treasure for the rest of my life. He is truly "The Man" to go to if you want your boat faster than most!

That is an awesome video.
Not entirely relevant, but to give some prospective on how good these guys were/are.
Before this run in 1986 Owen Boris held the record ( it might have been Mod-vp ) but his kilo was 126.??? mph. Consider that this was 23 years ago, with a mod-vp legal 2.4.... WITH SIDE WATER pickups. As were the rules. I know Owens XR had a lot of trick stuff on it for aerodynamics, and his side water pickup was a guarded secret. The prop was a 14 X 35 Hoss triton that his Dick O'dea 2.4 carb turned 7500 rpm. Word from Owen was that motor was about 270hp.

What these guys did was unreal... still a feat today!.

All good and all, but WOODuck is right about Ken Evans and his Bullet Tunnel deck. A mod 2.4 on a 12 " mid and speedmaster got 120mph in Australia about the same time which was WOW at the time. Plenty of Aussies have gone over the ton in ski race set up Bullets ect over here but nothig like 129 mph. This Glen must have had the whole game set from the start. Keep the specs on this boat coming. Great thread.

The video has all the runs from the 1987 NOA speed trial runs( or at least all the ones we got on video). Mostly Allisons but a few others in there as well. It's around 30 minutes long and has some other pieces of history as well as the 129 run by Glen.

$10 is the cost and that also covers the shipping to anywhere in the US.

You can send payment by paypal to my account: bdharden@pbtcomm.net

If you don't have paypal PM me for address to send a check.

I'll need to make some more DVDs up, so give me a few days to get that done.

That 129 was a helluva feat in 87 but it could be beat today. The motors today just make so much power. I think it's just a matter of somebody having the willingness to want to do it.
