For anyone wanting a pro SLR body at a good price, this is it - Best Buy has the (now discontinued) Nikon D200 at $599, which is an unheard of price for a pro body. This is an absolute steal.

no kidding, unbelievable!!!:thumbsup: Greg, how much better is that than my d80? I remember when we were at river ranch and I think you had your 200 and I had my 80. we were side by side shooting the same boats making passes. as I held down the button to shoot the pass, I heard click... click...click from mine, yours sounded like a machine gun.

I know the biggest problem with my pics is my lack of experience and how toy get the most out of my camera, but all things being equal, is it a big step up to the 200 from the 80?

I'm sorry Jody, I just got in today. I just saw this post now :(

My bet is that Best Buy will get more in stock, and I think you can find these in stores at this price too. The D200 has many advantages over the D80, though it will not really give better performance in terms of catching the shot. The differences are as follows:

This is a copy I made from another post comparing the D80 to the D200:

D200 is magnesium-alloy, D80 is polycarbonate
D200 is weather sealed, the D80 is not
D200 has 4-channel output and shoots at 5.5 FPS, D80 has 2-channel output and shoots at 3 (with noise reduction off)
D200 can meter AI/AIS (old, non-CPU) lenses, D80 cannot
D200 has better metering capability - 1005 segment meter on the D200 vs. 420 segment meter on the D80
D200 has wide-area selectable auto focus with selectable focus priority, D80 does not
D200 top shutter speed of 1/8000 sec., D80 top shutter speed of 1/4000 sec.
D200 has Kelvin white balance override, D80 does not
D200 flash sync at 1/250 sec., D80 flash sync at 1/200 sec.
D200 displays more data in the viewfinder (exposure, ISO)
D200 has a GPS option, D80 does not
D200 has a Wi-Fi option, D80 does not
D200 has custom shooting banks, D80 does not
D200 has true mirror lock-up, D80 does not
D200 can perform time-lapse exposures, D80 cannot
D200 has a larger image buffer than the D80
D80 has "scene mode" auto modes, D200 does not
D200 has separate, programmable AF-ON and AE-lock
D200 uses CF cards (at least an Ultra II is needed), D80 uses SD cards
Other minor differences

Most of what is said above will not matter for most people. The D200 does not have the auto modes that the D80 does. They both produce the same image quality. Some feel that the D80's processing engine delivers better JPEG images out-of-camera. The D200 has the same controls and menus as the D2Xs, the D80's controls are similar to those on the D70/D50. The D200 is larger and much heavier.

greg, that was totally not directed at you, more beating myself up. I knew I probably should have pulled the trigger last night, thought about it this morning, sent myself a text to remind me to do it, and by the time I got home tonight and did a little research, their site said sold out online (last night it said only available online). I will try their store tomorrow morning and I appreciate the extra info.

What do you want for your D80. I did talk with a person that works at best buy and he thinks that this is an inventory reduction and they may not get any more. I will keep checking as I do want one. Casey let me know what you are looking to get out of your D80 if you can. Bill

All of these photos were shot with a D200, and some are on Mercury Racing's website, 2008 catalog, and 2008 calendar. I have many more samples, but this is all I had handy from my blog site.

Greg,

Your shots are nothing less than making the viewer feel as though they are there watching it live !!

Just insanely clear !!!

Does that D200 have a lock to turn off all of those buttons on the back ?

I know my biggest problem I had with the Canon Rebel was hitting the timer function while trying to look through the view find while under way on a boat and trying to get shots off.

I got an email last night saying that my D200 was backordered, but then late this afternoon I got another email with a tracking number saying it was shipped. I guess I'll know by next week?

Bill sorry but I'm giving it to my parents. My dad still uses his old Sony Cyber-shot DSC-F717 and my mom has some little compact Sony. They'll love it for taking pictures of the grandkids!

Greg your pics are sick! I'm guessing everything will be pretty much the same as the D80 and D50, but if i have any questions i may call you.

Thanks Tim, I appreciate it :) There's a lock for the muti-selector, not sure about the other buttons though. The day of that shoot presented interesting challenges since the state of Florida was dealing with wildfires everywhere, and there was a very thick smoke haze in the air.

Thanks Casey, you'll love the D200. The menus and controls are much different than the D50/D80, and there are none of those [useless] automatic scene modes. I think you'll find it very easy to get used to and it's much quicker to adjust it while shooting. Just call me if you need anything, I'm glad to help.

I haven't used my D200 in over a year until I pulled it out last week for a few shots, but I believe the menus are very much like the D2Xs if not almost exactly like it.

Jody, that rocks! I'm glad you scored one, if you need any help, just let me know. Same goes for everyone too, of course :)

UPS just dropped it off and WOW! I'm sure as far as taking pictures I won't notice any real difference, but as far as camera quality there is a huge difference, I'm impressed!

Thanks Greg

Excellent shots, nice work. I bought a Canon recently but am kind of wishing I had waited and bought the D200 now...
