I am looking at 2 bass boats in particular, one has a 200HP blackmax and the other has a 150HP blackmax. Both are early 90s. Are there relatively cheap and easy ways to get more power out of these, specifically the 150hp motor?
Do powerheads swap between them? What are the most popular mods?
Sorry this is such a rediculous newbie outboard Q...

perhaps I should add more to this story.
I am considering 2 bass boats currently, one is a Champion 190 (18'6") with a 150 XR4. It doesn't have a jackplate. The boat is considered "turn key"so it wouldn't need any work to hit the water, but every boat can always use more power.
Another boat I am considering is a Champion 201 (20') with a 200 'max sitting on a a small jackplate, guessing 3 or 4". The boat hasn't been in the water for 6 years. It hasn't been ran past idle speed for over 3 years, and hasn't even started on muffs since then. If I pick that boat, it will surely need carb work, maybe more. Is there anything that I should do that that 200 before I fire it up? It there anything I could do to it for more power at the same time (preformance carb work, exhaust, water pump work, etc?)

Most popular mods by far is more compression, better fiber reeds, removal of VRO , removal of spark advance modual, install a better tuner IF you choose the 150....

if you start doing mods to motors almost 20 years old, it won't be so cheap when they go POP!. mechanics love it though.

I'm generally my own mechanic. I don't mind the labor much at all, of course I would rather be on the water.

If ya go with tha 200 ya gonna have ta spend some cash on it ta get it back inta shape, carbutrators, hoses (all) filter, water pump, fuel pump, all tha little things that might work when ya first start it but usually give up in short order. Maybe more than ya think if tha electrics have gone away. Give up tha oil injection thingy first. After ya satisfied that its healthy then do a few things to it. Thats just my way a thinkin' bout a motor thats had a lot a dead time over tha years.................T
