Hey Gang,
I am need of some advice on the procedure to replace the shifter/throttle arm on my 1981 Johnson control box . The tilt/trim switch feels like it is very loose in the housing. I am also seeing erratic tach readings when the tilt/trim is activated. The arm has also separated near the top (close to the tilt/trim switch). Thanks in advance

You have the handle that is all black? Remove the box and take out the bolt on the back side then take out the phillips head screws. You may be able to tighten the trim switches.

The handle is all black with a red pull up trigger. The switch is located under my thumb on the outside of the handle.I need to remove the handle and disassemble it to remove the switch.
Thanks

There is one allen bolt holding the handle on and you get to it from the back side of the box - opposite the handle. The bolt is down inside the center of the bore. Loosen it two turns and give the head of the bolt a rap with a punch and a hammer to loosen it from the tapered spline. When it is loose, take out the allen bolt and the handle will come off exposing the screws to mount the red shift detent, the cover and the trim switch. You may notice the same handle can be mounted on either side of the box to either set of splines.

I had the allen screw out but couldn't get the handle off. The tapered shaft explains why now. I'll try it tonight. Thanks for the help.
