what motor are you installing? had a friend with mx 13 with 3 cyl 70 hp jonnierude motor was on the transom ,all way down for skiing & running around, ran motor up 2 holes to run & handle better . very fun boat to play with in my highschool days  to answer your question ,no jackplate needed but adjustability can come in handy with a small amount of setback & hight adjustment .

I have a 77 Merc 500 15in shaft that i plan to put on but if i can run a 20in shaft then I may get a 70 or 75 hp omc. The 77 Merc 500 only has one set of holes.

seems the mx 13 would run close to 50 mph ,give or take a few with 70 hp & a 21 pitch sst prop,( before gps & radar ,just oldschool speedo) ,it handled decent for allround boating fun.another friend took an mx 13 & put a 175 merc v 6 that he cut down the midsection to 15 inches...back in the late seventies,:eek:VERY WILD RIDE ! cant remember if it had a setback or a cut transom. i would think that if you put 50 hp shortshaft on ,you would need the jackplate-setback.
