Hi all
I just bought a 2000 225 Pro Max on an a Allison XB2002. My question is about the oil injection. Should I remove the injection or leave it factory?
Thanks
Gary

Gary,
I hear from dealer friends that if you have the Pro Max model that has the electronic oil injection they are bullet proof. If you have the gear driven system that can be a weak link on those engines. Its a call you'll have to make. IMO I like to remove any and all factors of the possible engine failure equation. The removal of the gear type oil injection is a simple straight forward non intrusive task that most can do successfully for very little money. When the motor is pre mixed the lack of oil is now only left to and the responsibility of the owner mixing fuel not a mechanical system than can and do fail.

I would think about removing it, also I would go thru the motor and top pin the pistons before it came apart, other than that very good motors

Can I look at the motor and tell which type injection system it has?
Thanks

Gary,
To be sure jot down the serial number at the split case area on the port side under the flywheel should start with an OG, OD, OB number followed by a five digit number after the letters call in and a Mrcury dealer can tell you for sure. My guess is that a 2000 model is the gear driven one.

Myron also gave you some very good advise about top pinning the pistons. I find the 225 Pro Max engines are notorious about loosing locater pins and causing serious bore damages, from my experiances building V-6 Mercurys daily they are the highest failure rate of any V-6 I build, BUT when that issue is taken care of they are bullet proof long life engines...

Good luck,
Jay

With the year of your Promax........it should definitely by a gear driven oil injection system.

The 225X is the one with electronic oil injection.

The 225X is the one with electronic oil injection.

Correct.

I may have been playing with fire, but I never touched my previous motors (2000 225 Pro Max's) oil injection. They still ran perfect when I sold them at 450 hours. However, I had been told by a number of people that the weak link to the motor was the nylon gear for the oil injection.
