Just wondering...been in a little over 9 years and get out in a year and a few months. Went thru the nuke pipeline, then to Groton for nuke emergency weld school then to the USS Kentucky, SSBN-737 (blue) for almost 5 years and now on shore duty at Sub Base Bangor, Washington (NBK) working radcon for Code 105.3. Anyway, since I'll be getting out in a while here, just kinda lookin at what all's out there. From Ohio originally and looking to move back east somewhere when I get out. I have a buddy working at Watts Bar in TN, and know a few other guys that have gotten out recently working non-nuke jobs also, in random parts of the country. Basically I'm just wondering if anybody else here has been there, done that. All other replies are welcome too. Thanks!

I am not ex-navy but I have been doing commercial Nuclear work for the last 30 years, are you 108 qualified? I work radiation protection for Exelon which is the largest nuclear fleet in the USA, our company iis very big on hiring ex navy nukes, could be a plant operator. There are contract companies that hire ex navy for working shutdowns. Let me know if i can help.

Working in a submarine has to be the most sensory deprived job I could think of. Whats it like to be undersea like that?
Congrats on getting out, best of luck to ya. Theres got to be high demand for such a high skill/risk job out there. Cant be too many with your qualifacations.

Stoker1-the retention options are pretty good...for a 6 year re-enlistment they're offering bonuses of 50-90k. Pretty good money really...of course it's taxed well over 30%, but still a good chunk of money.
Rick-yes, I am currently 108 qualified. I'll give you a pm sometime. Thanks!
John-it's actually not as bad as you'd think under there. For the most part it's pretty stable...not much rocking around at all unless it's rough when we come up to periscope depth, but other than that, pretty smooth ride down there. Honestly, you're so busy down there the majority of the time you don't even realize you're under water. Stand watch, fix stuff, run drills, get a nap and go again...it's not too bad really, just sucks going down in a time capsule and coming back months later and find out what's been going on.
I litened to Coast To Coast AM Radio this morning and they were talking about some new Nuke Tech, and or fuel?, that a breakthrough in the sense that it has much less waste and is only dangerous for about 300 yrs. Anyone know of this?
It's Called "Fourth Generation" here's a link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Generation_IV_reactor

I fully understand military pay & entitlements. The thing I'm currious about (without research) is the possibility of such a bonus being nontaxed? You know how it is with the ground pounders.... they wait until they get downrange & then do the new contract. All tax exempt. (they deserve it).
Just currious.

Underwater=no internet...or anything, lol! We get the occasional e-mail, but that's few and far between. That whole not transmitting and remaining undected and whatnot...lol...I'll tell you what tho, I've got a good friend on the aircraft carrier John C. Stennis (CVN-74) and those spoiled brats have internet and tv and all that crap while they're out to sea! And as for going to sea goes, this shore duty bit is soooo sweet! This NOT going to sea thing is awesome! As far as bonuses being non-taxed, you gotta be in a 'combat zone', so I hear. I was never in a combat zone myself, so the opportunity never arose. And that whole 'paying myself' thing...I always thought it was wierd too...I'd rather get paid that much less and not worry bout taxes. Oh well...it is what it is... The Gen IV reactor thing...no clue on that one. Sounds pretty neat tho. I didn't read a whole lot into it yet (been working on stupid boats since I got off work), but I wonder what they use for fuel. Must have a lot shorter half life. I dunno. I've listened to that coast to coast show a little bit in the past...I'll tell you what, there sure are some space cadets that come on that show. I'll leave it at that. Anyway, time for bed...have a good one!
