I posted this question on the Technical Forum but only got one answer that I didn't quite understand.

The question is can performance propellers be safely repaired?

I have an old style 14.5 X 26 Mercury Chopper which has a crack at the leading edge of one blade and extends about one inch in.

My guess was that the propeller was now junk but a reputable propeller repair guy in our area says that in most cases this type of damage can be repaired.

Your input regarding the safety of such a repair would be much appreciated.

I'd call Steve Tillman @ 251 645-9697. He does Excellent work, on racing props, and lake props, and he's a great guy to talk to.

I would think that if your prop hasn't been thinned too much, that it would be an easy fix for him.

Call a prop shop and see what they say. I have heard they can do some miraculous things. My local guy is .R&R Prop Shop (http://www.randrpropshop.com) in Henderson, NV. Might try him. Kevin's a good guy, straight shooter. Goes by Propman on here I believe.

Art: That prop can be repaired, but it is only a matter of time before it breaks again. How long depends on how hard you run it. Choppers are notorious for breaking like that. We just cracked our unlimited prop testing, in the same place as yours. 26 Lightning ET. We will not be using this prop any further. already got a new one coming. It's not worth taking the chance of throwing a blade at high RPM. Gearcase damage can be severe. I would buy anew one,get that one fixed and keep it for a spare. My .02 worth. Best regards Vic :)
