O.k. I Have Already Read All The Threads On This Subject, But Here Is My Situation. I Installed A Brand New Bulb And Hose Kit On My 140 Evinrude, Replaced The Old Hard As A Rock One. Noiw I Seem To Be Having A Problem With The Bulb Sucking Shut. The Motor Does Not Run Lean As Far As I Can Tell And Does It At All Rpms. Could The Fuel/water Filter Need Replacing. It Has Been About 6 Moinths Since I Replavced It. Never Had This Problem Before I Replaced The Hose And Bulb, But Like I Said I Could Hardly Squeeze The Old One Since It Was So Hard. Even With My Foot. Also. Thanks For Any Ideas.

blocked vent could cause this. a kinked fuel line!

a junk bulb does it too... wouldnt be the first one I've seen thats a POS right out of the box. Was it a sierra or some other aftermarket brand?

just what they said. i would replace any fuel filters and check to make sure the tank vent is operable. does the pickup in your tank have a screen on it. is it clean. is there an anti-siphon valve on the tank that may be stuck. when i was doing some research for a buddies boat having fuel problems i came across quite a few people saying that the off brand bulbs are usually substandard. check the free things first and if that doesn't do it buy a good primer bulb

Let's make it simple. There's only one reason the bulb sucks shut........ the demand is greater than the supply. That means there's a restriction somewhere between the tank and the bulb INCLUDING the bulb as a possibility. Easy thing to do is try plugging into a portable tank. If that doesn't fix it, it's a restriction in the fitting on the hose where it plugs in, the hose between the tank and the bulb, or the bulb itself.

put the bulb between the filter and the tank,

antisiphon valve.... take a philip screw driver and knock it out.... it can starve a engine anyway.... remove the bulb see if you can blow through the line.. tord the tank... then put the bilb back on, and pump it without the fuel line hooked to te engine...... atleast it will let u know where the problem is.

BRP makes the BEST fuel line assemblies.

I bought one at Ace hardware and it did the same thing. JUNK! If it was hot out it was worse. Get a good one at west marine or boaters world for around $14. My problem was fixed.

tempo, mollens or whatever bought them, seirra, and any other aftermarket bulbs tend to leak or stick just as you have described.. OMC bulbs in my experiance seem to fail due to hardening or cracking as you described. but my best luck is with mercury bulbs... never ever had an issue and i have a couple fuel assemblies that are 30 years old and the bulb and its check valves are still flawless in operation.. sounds like the inlet side of the bulb is sicking closed when suction is applied by the engine
fuel pump.. replace the bulb with a OEM of either merc or OMC and problem solved

as for tempo, while they went under (or sold) their stocks are still in distributors around the country, so yes it is possible to get their products "new" yesterday i bought a 25 gallon tempo fuel tank from my distributor brand new out of the pheonix location, and it certainly did not have a full year of dust and neglect on it..

i had the same problem with my whaler i bought a new bulb put it in and it sucked itself flat so i went to take it out and i was pissed so i bent the thing in half and i felt something pop or move inside so i put it back in and it works fine so what im saying is try bending it until u feel something move and try it again

i messed up bulb that is sucking down can only lead to bad things...... get rid of it, and put the best on, or go to a electric pump..... lean pistons get pricey!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
