View Full Version : Are cracked propellers repairable?

I have an older style 14.5 X 26 Mercury Chopper which has a crack at the leading edge of one blade at about the centre of the blade and extending one inch in.
Our local propeller guy, who has a good reputation, has said that this sort of damage is in most cases repairable.
I would appreciate your comments out there in terms of whether it is safe to repair this sort of cracked propeller.
The prop shaft on my set up is about 1" below the pad when the motor is vertical but it is usually run well trimmed out at top speeds.
Also does anyone out there know what difference there is between the new Chopper 2 and the original Chopper. The only difference I see is that the new one doesn't have the weed cutters.
Will a new Chopper 2 run good out of the box or does it need to be further worked? I notice, from the pictures, that the finish is pretty rough on them.

Should be no problem repairing unless the leading edge has been thinned, than it may not turn out perfect again.

We have welded them with larger cracks and had no problems.

The Chopper #2s are no different than the older choppers. They do holeshot better with the weed cutters removed.

Our experience w/cracked props is just as you described. once they break they will break again. If you were to use a repaired prop on a normal pleasure boat , IE low power it probably would live. High perf operation where the prop is run surfacing, the blades are slapping the water every turn. They are vibrating like a tuning fork. Consider it the cost of doing business . Props don't live forever. A lost blade at hi RPM will be more devastating than the cost of a new prop & could be dangerous as well. Our best experiences have been w/Mercury lightning ET's. we have run yamaha's choppers you name it. Lightning is the way to go. My 2 cents. Best Regards Vic:D :)
