Anybody know the mph accuracy at speed of a good GPS like a Garmin 376 or a Lawrance c1900?

I have had three handhelds and one dash mount in the baot at one time just to do a comparison they were all within .01 mph of each other. The science of these things has become incredibly accurate. A buddy of mine is building a house next to me and they used GPS to lay the house on the lot. Suppose to be accurate within 1/4 of and inch.

Most or possibly all Garmin handheld models stop counting tenths once you get over 99.9 mph. ...101, 102, 103, etc.

Is there that much difference between 101 and 101.2 mph?:D

I think overall accuracy on most GPS is quite good, within a couple tenths of a mph, although lag is noticeable during hard acceleration (2-3mph). There are inherant problems, like in a fast moving body of water, the speed of water is included in your overall speed.

For practical purposes, it's probably the best way to compare with others, because most of us here report our results in GPS numbers.

Like said above, they are quite accurate. Sometimes they have their short hiccups. Don't trust them in your boat while changing elevations. lol

my garmin 276c and my gaffrig gps speedo are always with in 1-2 mph of each other on tops speed at the end of any given day. Usually closer to 1 mph and the gaffrig is always the faster one. Save for the occasional 165mph glitch my old gps units had they seem pretty accurate.

Mine is off by 1 MPH............I could tell people that it was EXACTLY accurate, but I wouldn't want to lie.

I don't know why people feel the need to add speed to what their boat REALLY does...........I don't do that...............

If you're changing elevation quickly enough to induce refresh lag, you might want to reconsider your use of the boat as your vehicle of choice, maybe something with wings and a propeller because you just drove off a cliff
