veterans park is in port st lucie- if you run the turnpike north get off at port st lucie blvd east- maybe 2 miles(i'll get the name of the road- i believe it is veterans memorial hiway)-rivergate plaza on corner, make a left, 1/2 mile on left-veterans park, plenty of parking, as far as ramp size, it is 3 wide, i've launched 32 ft boats there so size isn't an issue, should be fun!!!:D

Pah motel right across the street from me that I will get info on for anyone travelling. Everything in townm is $100. a night.
I will find out about gas and also for those that may be coming from the North.
I know Ziemer and the boys have done the trip down from Melbourne before and I think is similar distance to coming from PSL.
There is a nice ramp at the the North end of Fort Pierce (north of PSL 20 mls)
and another one on north end of Vero which is another 10 mls closer and both right on the I.C.
Also a ramp just south of my house which is still about 7 mls by boat to Hirams. Gorgeous run regardless of where you start.

Being that Charlie is putting this together for Sunday if anybody wants to hit town Saturday the night before I mght put something together at my place which is only 3 mls south of Hirams and we are on an acre with a ton of parking with docks at end of street. Bon fire/party maybe.

Haven't done a Capt. Hiram's trip in awhile. May not spend the night but at least make it a day trip for Saturday. We usually put in at the ramp off of 192 in Melbourne. It's a nice run south from Melbourne. If anyone else is close to the Melbourne area and wants to run south let me know, maybe we could setup a time to meet.

I did this run a few years back in the Vandal. It can get pretty rough in the afternoon along the powerplant (between Stuart and Ft. Pierce)...rough enough to do in my transom. If anyone wants to avoid that area you can put in at Ft. Pierce at the causeway and meet up on the way north.

For this long of a run on the Intracoastal it is relatively idle-zone free:
-Right south of the ramp at Veterans
-Roosevelt Bridge
-Ft. Pierce bridge
-Hwy 60 in Vero

Also to those looking for hotel info here yah go....

There is a really, really nice place right across the street from us on U.S.1
Three miles south of Sebastian. Old style Fla, drive up "motor lodge".
Rooms are clean as pins, an awesome pool, shuffle board, pavilion with built in grill and sink for cook out's, trailer parking behind complex (not visible from road) with water and electricity for battery chargers and washing boats and flushing motors.
Rates start at $66. ($100. won't get you a room in town!) for a single queen with microwave and fridge to $86. for two twins andddddd a full kitchen.
They are also pet friendly for anyone bringing their kids.
772-589-3855
I'm taking the Mrs there for a get away as soon as we can afford it!

Also looking seriously at a party/bon fire at my place Saturday night if we get enough interest.
So far I think Capt. Corona is making a weekend of it and Frank Mole and his buddy Jimbo Lloyd the X Mod VP driver think they'll be in town for the weekend as well and they are all in to it so far.
We may fire up the VCR and watch some races from back in the day and burn what ever ain't bolted down out back.

Will get some pix's of the islands in the next few days and check on gas for those needing it.

Something else for you guys coming by boat to be aware of is Manatee zones which changed in Novemember. I would reccomend staying the marked channel of the I.C. unless you are sure of the area. I got a written warning in my area in the freagin 13' Whaler!
The speed limit in the channel is 30 MPH. There are multiple unlimited speed zones all along but not marked. I have a folder (free for the asking at most marinas etc) that shows them and was going to scan/post them but my scanner is on the fritz.

Once you pass the north end of Vero it is a protected, gogeous run for the next 10+ miles almost to Sebastian only issue being cruiser traffic.

Matt, the spoil islands are one of our favorite things and one of the reasons we moved here. Our favorite one is about a mile out from Hirams and has a totally protected horse shoe bay w/a perfect sand beach.
That island is connected to the next one north by a sand side walk at least 100 yds long. Pretty cool.
Is always boats camping on the weekends. On one some one actually built a dock and a toilet :p

OK. so sounds like party/bon fire at our place Saturday afternoon/evening.
BYOB

This is Charlies gig and I'm not going to step on his toes but being the "local" here.........I'd think maybe we all meet at Hirams by boat for a few and then head to one of the islands (a mile away) and take over a beach for the day. This would be great too for anyone with kids.
If the winds not blowing we could also run to the sand bar at the mouth of the inlet (5 or so miles) which fills with boats at low tide.

For those wanting to do the beach thing you'll have beach space for chairs, easy up's, fishing etc, etc.

If we go to the one I know of we'll be on the back side of the island away from Johnny Law and believe this is unilmited speed zone but willl verify.
It has a deep lead in and sand bottom for the bigger boats as well.
With the horse shoe shape would be a great place for some group photos and fly bys once I verify speed zone. The picture in Forkin'Crazys avatar was shot there from the beach!

Ziemer and Skater Mike, I know you guys know but for others bringing bigger boats make sure and stay in the marked channel unless you're following someone that knows. I tried cutting between the islands by Hirams one time in our old 17' Beater and went from 25 MPH to zero in about 2 feet!

The southern part of the route, from PSL to Ft. Pierce, can get pretty nasty if there is a north or south wind. Not fun in the 18' or less boats. Ft. Pierce north is more narrow and there isn't as long a north-south fetch either.

I am getting a lot of call from guys with smaller boats that plan to use the ramp by my house which still gives them aboout a 10 mile run to Hirams and with the speed being so tightly controlled in most places my guess is we'll only be able to play in specified speed zones and that will still depend on conditons for the little boats.
Sounding like more people hanging out between bars/islands and cooking in the sun than that much running. Area is perfect for it with tons to see but the uninhabited islands with their own beachs are a special treat to a lot of people.
It's probably 10 mls from Hirams to the Sand bar at the inlet so theres 20 mls not counting what you did getting back and forth from Hirams.
I'd guess an easy 40 mls w/o really going anywhere.
Also for any campers, I have room in my back yard for tents and there is a CLASS AAAAAA camp ground (Long Point) just north of the inlet that has lots on water with your boats right there  One of our favorite places.

Can we coordinate a meeting point and time around that ramp to run to the dest. with the rest of the pack. We could raft up until they get there. Id be up for a 10 mile run and handing out in the area for sure. I have to drag my A$$ all the way over from Ft. Myers and back.

This sounds like it's turning into a nice little run.

We'll have at least 5 boats coming from the north, but I gonna say it'll be more like 10+.

Foley, I've made the run 1/2 dozen times from Melbourne down to Capt. Hirams and probably only 1 of those times I would have not wanted to be in the Allison, and in reality I'm sure it wouldn't have been any worse than a normal day on Lake George. The river is failry well protected so it doesn't get too rough. Like Gary said the biggest thing to look out for are large cruiser wakes.

Anyone wanting to meet up at the Melbourne ramp let me know, and we can coordinate an approximate meeting time. We'll be in the Pantera, so I'll set the cruise control at about 50 mph. There will be a couple faster boats that also know the way, so don't worry if ya want to run faster than 50. :D :p

Depends on who shows up and when but we'll definately hook you up if you're coming all the way from there!
I live 2 mls from that ramp so I'll make sure you know what/when/where.

Watch this thread and then hang on to my cell (772-418-0902) when it gets close if there is any confusion.

The southern part of the route, from PSL to Ft. Pierce, can get pretty nasty if there is a north or south wind. Not fun in the 18' or less boats. Ft. Pierce north is more narrow and there isn't as long a north-south fetch either.

Sounds like one HELLACIOUS turn out...Captain Hiram's reservations maybe??? They have the outside Sandbar (boat which is cool) or booths... maybe a rough number on how manys going and we'll call ahead... (at least it will give us an Idea of how many people are going) Because it seems like the group is getting bigger and bigger, "more the marrier"... The week before the run call for reservations and if more show then they can just pull up a chair no biggie!!! I'll start with I have 4 in my party...

Charlie--last time we were putting in at 10:15, I bet we actually planed off at 11. Might want to stay in cell phone touch with those who don't want to face the wide open water south of Fort Pierce. (Cap!)

From my recollection, as you head north from Fort Pierce, you do have 2-3 miles of wide Indian River north of the really nice narrow run before you get to Hiram's. Depends on the wind--we did it many times in the 14' Vandal when my in-laws lived about a mile north of where Gary lives now in Sebastian.

Frank--as soon as the economy picks up, move to Florida! But don't tell anyone else.

Gary--I'm dying to meet you, and the vids sound great, but I am doing the two-way run. I might think about driving back up to your place--depends on how complicated things get.

Count, my charts don't show close enough definition of that area for island names. It's basically just south of Hirams and then straight east.
I'll get into town in the next few days and get people a better description.
It's easy to find but the only thing is we will probably be on the far side so you won't know we're there.

Pat, the feeling is mutual! Loved the pix's of your boat from the Lake O run.
I think you do what you need to do to be here :)
Enough people calling and asking questions that there may end up being cars with open seats going back and forth.

Mike, good idea but how many and when? I know Hirams well enough (as does my charge card) that they won't cut us any slack if we're late.
It's place that we can just mill around and BS a bit w/o havin a table too.
One of the issues with this run and why I haven't done wnything until Charlie decided to as everyone wants to go to Hirams.
Cool place, but it's a Tiki Bar on the water. Much water to explore and to have our own island with this many boats?????
I think Hirams for sure but not sure how long people are going to want to stay there that just drove 4hrs to put their boat in 8 mls away???
I think you guys do your trip up from the south and I think we are going to have a fair size group leaving the ramp by my house.

Also to the out of towners asking, there are either 2 or 3 ramps right in town less than a mile from Hirams. That would put you right in the heart of it with your vehicle right there.

So I guess at this point the only thing for sure is we are having a party at my house??? Guess I better go tell the Mrs :reddevil:

what about Sunday? Super Bowl and all...
My opinion is we do it all again. If we have people driving across the state for this deal I can't see making it for one day

The local water front pubs hop as good Sunday as Saturday anyhow. My vote would be to play/explore Satutrday, let the out of towners get the lay of the land and then go back out and play where ever you want to Sunday???

What ever you visitors decide is fine with me. Theres nice places 10 - 20 mls away if you want to do a trip or back to the sand bar/islands but I'm thinking it will take a full weekend to do this right :reddevil:

What do you guys think?

you will be able to tell as there will be two islands connected by a 100 yrd strip of sand 10 yrds wide.
We will be on the back side of the southern island.
Could actually do it anywhere but the channel is on the west side of those islands so when a 70' Sport Fish passes.........your boat ends up on the beach. Based on wind/water direction the water is typically cleaner on the back side also.
The back side is protected by the shape of island and is opposite side of channel from ICW. I will check but also think that is a speed zone on that side.
If I'm right that means we can walk out on a penninsula of the beach and watch guys make passes close enough to throw spray on the beach.
It is a popular area for boaters/campers so we'll have to get there fairly early to stake out our turf. You also have a nice view of the barrier islands from here too.
This is the place for a grill, etc, etc.

As a general rule for the area, the water is almost always deeper/safer on the east side of the islands (except where marked) than the west (mainland side).
At low tide you can come close to walking from the west side of some of the islands to mainland.

shot these at lunch today and being cloudy on a Thursday theres no fun/sun.

Checked on gas an Hiram's is the only place I found and they only have diesel and 89. If someone really needs it you could bring empty jerry cans in the boat (safer than full) and do the one block walk from the city docks to the Hess station.

This is another place about a 1/4 mile north of Hirams. WAY better food, plenty of docks and the bar/restaurant is open aire weather permitting.
That is an island at the end of the pier and the one closest to Hiram's.

Another place 1/2 mile south of Hirams and our favorite. Tourists go to Hiram's, locals go here. It's a dump w/a million dollar view.
Problem for bigger boats though as they are having issues with the docks so it is beach access only.
BTW, $11. for bucket of 5 bottles.

This is the string of islands I am talking about. We would commandeer the back side of the farthest island south (right in the pictures)
There are actually 3 islands in these shots. All attached by tiny strips of sand.
On nice weekends there is 8 - 10 boats (plus tents) on both sides of all 3 islands.
I still need to confirm speed zones on back sides of islands and if not we will end up within a mile one way or the other and I will post changes.

You can see, once you get to Hiram's everything is right there.

Anyone with kids, they are guaranteed to see schools of dolphin. For the fishermen in the crowd, the world renowned Sebastian Inlet is straight across the I.C. from here.
A 9 yr old kid just caught a 150lb, 7' tarpon there!

This is to the north..

interrogated at the Tiki Bar while taking those pix's. It seems that the owner is a bit of a seedy character.
Told the guy (following me) what I was doing and he didn't believe me :p
The owner got a grant from the state to improve those docks and install sanitation/pump out stations. He took their money, hired a low ball dock builder, never did the sanitation and pocketed the rest
He's been in/out of jail waiting on his trial.
Oh yeah, the dock is closed because when we had a storm just after they were built, the pilings a house boat was tied to at the end of the dock broke loose and one of the pilings went through the hull  Oop's.

I have been reading along with these two threads (this one and the Jupiter Sandbar Run thread) and, as much as it goes against my better judgment, I figured it's time to review the bidding before this turns into a real cluster. Here's what I understand; make your comments:

A group with Charlie are going to launch at Veterans Park in Port St. Lucie (everyone planes off at 10 o'clock), running south down the north fork of the St. Lucie River, under the Roosevelt Bridge, around the point and north on the ICW to Captain Hiram's

Some other boats, including Motorheadbishop, will join that group at Fort Pierce either because of fuel limitations or to avoid some of the run on the rougher parts of the ICW. Someone believes that 93 octane is available at Taylor Creek if it is needed.

Another group, including Ziemer, are going to launch at Melbourne and run south to Captain Hiram's.

There is some thought that our group might be better handled at the place south of Hiram's.

Some more may launch right at Sebastian, either at the city ramps or a ramp near Gary's (Instigator), hang around and generally be annoying while they wait for the rest of us.

We will all eat lunch at Captain Hiram's, intending to be at noontime.

This is where it gets fuzzy. I guess the thought is that everyone will leave Hiram's, go out to the secret beach on the wrong side of the island and hang out/play in the boats for a while. At some point presumably the Veterans Park group will head south, and the Melbourne group will head north.

I think somewhere in here Gary suggested hoisting a few (byob) and watching some videos at his house that evening, and somehow I think maybe we're also going to burn Gary's house down for a bonfire-- though I think some people might be thinking we'll have a bonfire out on the island

Some people, especially those trailering a long distance, will hang around the Sebastian area and play again on Sunday

----- am I getting the hang of this?

Pat, I think you're spot on to this point. The bon fire idea was to go with the party/beer/lie's/video's at my place Saturday afternoon/evening and not on the islands although that is permissible but then we'd have drunk people attempting to boat our skinny ass waters in the dark which probably wouldn't be pretty nor cheap..

----- am I getting the hang of this? LIL TOY I think that about sums it up except for burnin down garys house I think the bonfire will be at the island, Don't think we should stay for the bonfire due to the fact that we would be riding back in the dark in unfamiliar waters. max out

make an apperance to Hirams so they can say they've been as it is a neat place.
The dump though, would let us carry up our own beach chairs if needed, Fri and Sat afternoon they grill burgers and dogs for donations :)
For anyone that wants a real meal, there is a killer Italian/pizza restaurant (very casual) 30' across the street from the Tiki Bar.
Now I've just got to figure out which boat to get ready. May have to take the STV for it's last hurah and to prove to some of you that it actually exists :)
I also need one of the attending Offshore historians to pay attention in the "head" at the Tiki Bar. There is a large picture in there from what looks to be the '80's of a 30 - 35' Corsa, twin I/O about 30' in the air and the boat is named "Miami's Finest". Awesome shot and curious to the history.

Spoke with Taylor Creek Marina in Fort Pierce (877-484-0339, mm 184). They usually sell it, don't have it now. I asked if it was pretty sure that a truck would come in before January 31, got a not clear answer. It may be that they just aren't filling that tank now. Told her I would check back the week before the 31st.

Depending on what the rest of my visitiors want to do I may be in depending which of my boats is "functional" at the time :p
The run south from the ramp by my house to the bridge in Vero (about 8 - 10 mls each way) is one of the prettiests stretches of that trip IMO.

for anyone traveling by car or with the time.......there is a place right between Fort Pierce and Vero Beach, directly on U.S.1 called the "Marine Connection".
It's a surplus marine sales warehouse. Has to be 200K sq.ft. under roof!
If you need ANYTHING for a restoration etc, here's where to go. There prices have gone up to close to retail on some stuff but will usually haggle.
The have a couple thousand gauges, a complete isle of hydraulic steering supplies including rams and helms, trailer supplies etc, etc.
Literally you could tow in a bare hull/motor and tow out a complete rig.
For anyone in process it would be a great place to kill and hr or 2.

They're about 45 mins south of me. Closed Sun/Mon.

You can get side steering rams for $500. - $700. for the top name stuff.
I bought railing mounts for Cheryls Whaler their for $4.95 per and the closest West had was almost $20. and they didn't even have the right size.

had had the blades cut off and welded back on. In magic marker, written on the blades it said "36" Would have bought it if the welds looked better.

In the back 1/2 of the building they have teak doors, seats, rub rail, l/u's, canvas, marine stoves, refrigerators etc, etc.
I bought my passenger, loaner vests there too. 4 buckle with leg straps for $49.99. I bought 4 :p
For a project like my Sonic I'll go in and pull all the gauges I want for the twins and then offer them .75c on the dollar.

Also bought the race style stainless speedo p/u for my STV there. I think they're @ or above $100. retail now. They had a box of them and I paid I think $39. (should have bought a dozen of them)

Saturday night at our house here's what me and the Mrs have come up with.
We have a huge roasting pit out back left over from a hog roast so we are going to bring it back to life and use it as the community grill.
It is approx. 3' X 6' so room for everybody and what ever they want to burn.
We'll supply charcoal, paper plates, plastic untensils, napkins etc.
Cheryl is going to make enough sides for everyone too. There is a Publics grocery store right across the street from our house so you guys won't have to worry about keeping food in the boats all day.
After you put your boats away, stop in there and grab your beer and dogs/burgers,steaks what ever and thats all you'll need.
There is also a liqour store in the same parking lot

Depends on where you put in. Some of the group will be hauling A but a lot of the trip is speed controlled anyhow. Once they get to Sebastian, most will be hanging out in a smaller area and spending quite a bit of time on the beach lying to each other. You would be most welcome in the group
Rememeber too there are ramps right there in town.

GDM- we will be about 3 or so miles from the inlet... Just outside the inlet to the Right hand side you will be in what us locals call the MONSTER HOLE!!! If the conditions are right it would diffently be worth running over there w/ the ski for a few... Just sold are gp800 a few months back it was a blast... If you have a helment bring it, most of the guys doing alot of hang time were helments, but whatever, it'll be a blast regardless!!! TICK, TALK, TICK, TALK... Next weekends almost here...

On the run that caught your interest--Stuart to Clewiston--I bet the group ran around 75, maybe a little more up the river (us slower guys were running in wake the whole time). Maybe for us a little more on the lake because it was so flat calm on the way out. I was nearer 50 once the lake got rough coming back.

I was averaging about 50-60 on the way there for the same reasons on the canal wound it up to averaging in the 70's once we hit the lake and on the way back evreyone was spread out more so we could all wind them up more once we got back on the canal. Pat what day are you going up, I'm probably going up on friday, theres a nice holiday in express near charlie's with a great dinner and breakfast buffet.

earlier this week it was looking like i was coming down with an empty trailer hitch. i pm'd a couple of guys on here with hydrostreams for sale . that would have been awesome if i could have picked one up

but then out of nowhere my pump and prop for my jetski showed up (it was in california getting reconditioned/tuned and it was not looking like it would be back in time )
now that i got it , im goanna bring the jetski down for sure

im really goanna try to go to this event , i never did any boating in that area , i have family scatterd in jupiter , port st lucie and some othe nearby towns but never hit the water in that part of florida

ive been hearing about sebastian inlet since i was a young kid

If you want a cheap boat for while down, check craigslist in the area. Usually 2 grand or less for something woth owning. There has been a decent looking Switzer Craft w/a V-6 Yammi for sale on there for quite a while.

I would love to come up the night before. Matt lives in PSL, so I would have free lodging. But Friday night is the Celine Dion (sp?) concert I gave to my wife for Christmas--I am going to have to get up very early Saturday. If I can work it, I will try to do the two-way run Saturday, then drive back up to Gary's for a little bit Saturday night. See what kind of shape this old body is in by the time the boat is on the trailer.

meat for the grill and condoms for the skanks. Frank's getting to town ahead of you so you may have to share. Skanks that is

When we used to drag the old Sonic to Lake Erie every weekend some times the lake was too rough to go out so we'd use the boat as our travel trailer and go bar to bar until we were done then crawl in and call it a night
The key was to pass out some where that also served coffee and brakfast the next moring w/o moving the boat. Don't try this at home kids :reddevil:

took the wifes boat out to the islands today to scope it out.
Still haven't verified the legalities/speed zones of area but can reaffirm it is as I remembered.
The island is big enough and laid out in a manner that most of the east side where we will be is hidden from the mainland from where most "people" hang out.
It does also drop off fast enough off the peninsula from the beach that you can throw spray on dry sand. May not be legal, but can be done & is THE perfect place for pix's/video's.
Was also calm enough that I raced my neighbors 2 seat PWC to the inlet and out into the Atlantic and back. What a blast BTW :p He'd never seen a 13' Whaler run that good  Lost a cushion and one of my shoes though :o

Is the next island straight north of the green I.C. marker #69.
