All Honost Openions Welcome. I sold my 1980 Hydrostream Vulture W/1991 2.5L within 100 hrs on rebuild, basically stock with stock oil injection system. I ran the motor and test drove the boat with the Buyer prior to purchase. I ran the engine through it's complete power & RPM range and the buyer drove also.
Boat was purchased as is no warranty & title transfered. Buyer launched boat yesterday. Buyer calls my cell. Engine just stopped running. I asked many questions, i.e. low water pressure, spike in temp etc all answers were no. Starter tries to engage but won't turn engine. Voltage good and can rotate flywheel with hand.
Brought boat back. Before I even started inspecting I offered buyer a complete refund, Buyer refused. Removed all plugs rotated flywheel hear klunk rotation stops. Inspect, #6 pistin shows damage. Remove head. #6 piston is fried/melted, head is beat all to hell and no good. Found pieces of wood in head cooling hose port. I want to & believe the guy is 100% Honest.

You've already done all you should . You gave he man the opratunity to walk away with a full refund , and he didn't take it . As Is ,Where Is , You gave him an out . These things happen ,and there is No Warning sometimes . As for the wood in the cooling passage ,someone hit something somewhere ,but if it's just there and only a small peice I don't see that as the problem . Now if it had clogged the low water pickup , them been cleared , that would be a Major Problem .
If you have spare parts and can repair it without major cost to you ,that would be a nice jester on your part ,and give the new owner a chance to learn about his motor . But other then out of kindness , your deal is done .

I'm guessing this is what you are going to keep hearing. You did right, he refused. End of story.

I know you said you belive him but when it comes to money i`ve seen the most honest people lie. Ever heard this, "I didn`t hit anything"?
I had a close friend once that i rebuilt his 140 Evinrude. One day some three month`s later he broughjt it back with ALL four pistons burned. Said it was idleing and just died. Then his fishing buddy walks up laughing and telling about how they was stuck in some moss and he had the motor trimmed up real high throughing water and moss high in the air till the motor quit. I told my friend to go away!
You did the honerable thing by offering the full refund when you realy didn`t have to. If no warrenty was implied it`s his baby. It was a used boat/motor. **** happens!

Did you get a statement in writing that says "as is"? If so its his problem now, sounds like he hit something. i.m.h.o.

You did more than my seller did. I was in the same position. I paid premium price for an 81 completetly restored VKing. The owner said the motor had less than 20 hours on it since he personally rebuilt it. Started and ran fine until the third trip out where it seized completely on me. I certainly did not get an offer to return it. He sent me a bunch of junk parts left over which he said I could sell to recoup my loss. My engine builder is pretty sure the motor let go because the owner had the ECU remapped by Rapair.
It cost me $3500 to rebuild the motor. I now have about 14K into a 1981 boat. Since I paid 9K for the boat I would have at least expected the prior owner to split the cost of the rebuild. No such luck there.
Like anything buyer beware. When you drive it off the lot it's yours.

If you are a private seller (not a dealer) all sales are considered to be AS IS unless there is a written warranty that states other wise. And in North Carolina any legal binding document still has to be notarized
your call but i would say it is his puppy now. Welcome to high performance boating:confused:

:iagree: Its tough to do but it is part of what we do. **** blows up and tears up most of the time more then it stays on the water. Got a bud who bought a boat a lil while back. Ran it 2 or 3 times the couple weeks after and ended up slingin a rod through the block. Injector crapped on him. Do you think he called for a refund. NO! Its part of boatin.
You did all ya could do when ya offered a refund to begin with. Then tore into the motor for him. I think you've done enough on your end.

I agree - its kinda weird, these motors never blow up! (LOL). 3 of my first 4 trips in my first gofast boat resulted in cooked pistons - wouldve made someone of higher intellegence say enoughs enough - but not me!

WOW!! Didn't expect so many responses with basically the same answer. I just want to see the Kid have a good first buying experience. And yes I have bought high performance things and blown them sky high but never went back to the seller requesting anything. As is no warranty is As is no warranty.To answer the below question. YES I have a notarized sales receipt that clearly states;
"Seller accepts no responsibility for improper boating use or safety. All items mentioned herein are sold as is no warranty(s) apply".
I still think I'm going to offer some assistance i.e I perform all labor and pay for shipping of a power head but not eat the whole thing. If he refuses my offer then I will wash my hands completely.

If this issue keeps nagging at you then offer some assistance again which I think is going overboard, although I would probably feel the same way if put in that position. It seems you did all you could so maybe it's time you cleared your conscience. You sold the kid "as far as you know" an honest performance boat.
Your a stand up guy though for caring.

I would help all I could short of digging in my own pocket. It's not your financial burden, but your help could save a lot of dough on his end.

I am the kid who bought the boat. First of all this is my dream boat and I still love it thats why I didnt take his refund. I had been looking for a Hydrostream for a long time and found a couple nice boats but nothing close to the condition of this boat it is in almost perfect shape. Second of all I have 100% confadence he had no idea or conncerns about this motor. Hstream1 is the most helpful guy I've every bought anything from. The first time I went to look at the boat he talked and showed me everything I was getting myself into with high performance boats and thats exactly what I was looking for. We have came to a Very fair deal and noones balls where busted. I hope other people read this and help others out like Hstream1 helped me. Im brand new to this hobby but Im obsessed already.
