DR, the pros always do it in gear, but I've always done it in neutral because the shiftshaft rotation is more precise that way. There shouldn't be anything holding it but the 3 things you mentioned. Is it on enough to get any of the nuts started? If you do it in neutral and the water tube is ligned up, rotating the flyweel should make it go right up.

Make sure the seal at the bottom of the crank that seals the splines did not fall out. later Larry D

Sometimes the shift shaft seems like it is lined up but it is not. It will make a solid sound like it is bottoming out on something else but it will actually be pushing the shift shaft up. You can sometimes have an extra hand wiggle it up above under the cowl, and/or use a real thin long nose pliers to rotate it a little either way to get the splines lined up and then you can pull the case up into place.
That layout just totally sucks on the Mercurys and they've never improved it in almost 50 years. Guess they're still afraid to break Carl K's tradition of making maintenance difficult.

Ron, that's the only reason I do em in neutral. I've never seen it fail to take care of shiftshaft alignment.
Sammy, why wouldn't your's use an alignment tube? I've never seen that either.

Put it in forward gear, spin the prop backwards to line up the driveshaft splines and use a pair of needle nose plies to move the shift shaft slightly if needed. It's also easier if the motor is tipped up. If the corrsion coller came off the end of the driveshaft you've got a pain in the ass on your hands. Always use the guide tube.
I'll take mercs shaft arrangement over omc's little screw under the carb trick any year.

Capt thanks this one just dont want to go. Ive done a ton of water pumps but kind of new to this merc thing guess I need to stay with omc. Thanks for all the responces and I got someone gonna try and lend a hand today. I can see nothing stopping it from going on. Rick

Its on had a friend come over big mo about 300 lbs he pushed and nothing got mad and hit it with a 2x4 and it move enough to start a nut. It was a biotch I rather screw with the omcs that said im back in black:eek:I got about 20 gals to burn and the tags die on the first and Fl wants $240 to register it and I dont have that in it. This is the same rally sport(sidewinder) I have had for 12 years. Thanks to all and Merry Christmas. Rick

That's usually how it goes for me...walk away from it, come back later, and it goes together. If the Merc water pumps lasted more than a couple seasons (tops) it wouldn't be so bad.
Some of the older OMC twins, like the 1950s 5 1/2's, had to have the powerhead pulled to change the impeller because there was no way to disconnect the shift shaft down below and it connected to the shift lever under the powerhead. But the ones that had the inspection plate on the midsection were the cat's meow. 15 minute job and the inspection plate was also a cool-sounding exhaust relief if you left it off.

Mine's due for an impeller in the spring, will have to try that. Rotating the flywheel to line up the drive shaft splines would be much better than fiddling with the shift shaft.

There are four things.... De Rick is in the wrong state...He has a Merc...He needs to pay FL their import tax...His gas is going stale...........
