I have a 1992 Fuel Inj. 200 xri that I have been fighting the idle now for almost a month... I have sinc;d the butterflies to assure there all the same. The problem is the motor will NOT idle smooth under 1050 rpms, it starts to caugh as if it runs on 6 cylinders then 4 then back up on 6 cylinders if I put the idle any lower than 1050... I would like for it to idle around 900 smoothly and it REFUSES to go that low... WHATS THE DEAL???

Prolly needs the injectors cleaned, the VST cleaned and the TPS adjusted. And some new plugs. :)

and probably a broken reed from turning 7k+ rpms w/ steel reeds:eek:

it does not say in any of the books, but the way to adjust the butterflies is as follows, bottom full closed, the top just cracked, about a 1/4 turn open, then set your TPI,

:iagree::iagree:Those are all great suggestions.... A few more things YOU can check also..
Injectors cleaned ( Brucato )
New reeds ( Tony Doukas )
New NGK plugs ( BR8HS Gapped @ .035" )
Air barbs cleaned
TPI set
Throttle blades synked
Timing stabilizer box may be in question, I'd remove and set total timing @ 25 ( Make sure timing arm is advancing and not sticky )
Leak down test the motor to confirm ring /bore health
Make sure fuel filters are clean ( check fuel supply for contaminants )
Check batter health ( Must be >12.5 not running and >14 ish running @ 1500
Check for healthy spark on all with air gap tester ( need to air gap arc 3/8")
Good hunting....Happy Holidays to All

I have the same motor, just to try and pinpoint the issue mine was sitting a while when I bought it. I ran some Evinrude Fuel System cleaner on clean ratio and it did wonders on the injectors - try some and at least you will know if thats the issue - I run it now as a tune up thing and it clears it up within 30 minutes running time-good stuff.

Everything that you do adjust the butterflies change the TPI. When you say 1050 RPM are you talking about with the LU submerged with water backpressure? This EFI isn't real hard to set up properlly but it has to be done in a sequence. The TPI is a bear to get. .250 V + or - .010 V. Your pulse in your finger can change it also when you tighten the screws on the clamp. Also ant time you have a problem that you can't figure out. Check the cheap stuff first, then RTFM. Do Comp tests, check spark, check fuel, check Lync n sync before you start twisting screws and changing too much stuff.

Thanks to the MRCRSR who found the problem w/ the rough idle.
The stator went BAD... @ idle it was only firing the left bank and acasionally firing the right bank, anything over 1,100 rpms the stator fires both and is fine all the way up as far as she would turn without the smallest miss but under 1050- 1100rpms it would just go to crap.... WEIRD but thats what it was (bad stator)... Thanks again to all, for all the help and good info...
