Hootyman sez howdy to all. I've been lurkin' about for the last six or eight months and now I need some help / advise. The crankshaft broke right at the beginning of the journal for nr.2 piston. When it let go, the top seal ring ate a groove in the block where it seals. It appears to be about .020" in the deepest part which is at the bottom of the throw. My plan iz to degrease and dimple the area, put a thin layer of JB Weld in the groove and set the new crankshaft assembly in and temporarally bolt on crank case. After JB Weld sets up, remove crank case and finish assembly.
Anybody ever try this before?
Anybody ever have the same problem with a different solution?
Lemme know what ya'll think.
TIA.

I thought of that and I'm sure somebody, someplace can do it, but the machine shops I called and described what needed doing, didn't want any part of it.
Thanks for the responce though.

I had this done to a V-4 once to put a later crank in an earlier block. A competent outboard machine shop can do it. I had mine done at Miller Performance in St. Cloud Fl.

O-K,
I found an outboard machine shop and the old man there looked at the groove in the block and crankcase and said "That ain't gonna hurt nothin'. Put it back together and run the s**t out of it". Made Hooty a happy man.

That was an original crank Dave, no repair. I've got a couple of fotos of it but I don't know how to post 'um here. If you wanna see 'um, I'd be glad to email to ya. You can email me at:

What year model you working on?

You can probably find another block and crank as cheap as you can have that block repaired.

I know where a 78 200 is here in GA that you could probably get for a couple of hundred dollars, if not less. I just sold a whole good running rebuilt motor for $600.

Thanks for the heads-up Keith. This one's a '76 and it's already going back together. It was a fresh engine (under 100 hrs.) with .020" over Wiseco pistons and some moderate porting. I'll sure keep ya in mind tho, and if it shucks again, I'll be gettin' back to ya.

Thx & c/6

How did you manage to break the crank?

It just broke! I'd been cruzin' at about 4 grand, backed out of it and it made a hell-of-a-racket. Started knockin' like mega bucks, and sure enough. I have a friend that works for Bell & Howell and I sent him and his group fotos of the break and they all seemed to think it was a built-in flaw.
I've got the pictures and if you would like to take a look, I'd be glad to email'm to you. I don't know how to post pictures here or I'd show 'um to everybody.

Sure. Send them to me. I'll post 'em for ya. Should be interesting. Sounds like a flaw in the crank. I was wondering if you were in the "no-fly" zone when it broke (63-6500rpm).
