Following on from our Annual Sydney Bridge to Bridge Ski Race Classic event a couple of weeks ago, some of the professional photographers now have their shots up on the internet.

The link below seems to be one of the more extensive collections and has some good shots of the boats

http://www.inthazoneimages.com.au/events-photos/ski-racing/

When the page loads, if you scroll down, look for the image with 2008 Sydney Bridge 2 Bridge. Once you've clicked that link, the "Race Day" link will take you to the master page for the event with all of the teams listed...

Not that we were in any of the faster classes, but our Boat "Rage" is looking ok for 60mph :)

Hope you all enjoy the pics.

Hey afr - The big Superclass Boats are running Twin Turbo Big Blocks with 2 speed transmissions and number 6 drives out the back. On the straights they're now typically hitting 125mph and some of em are probably now nudging 130... :leaving:

The fastest man up the river, Jason Walmsley, ran in a 1-up ski race in May and they did the 70 mile course in 36minutes and some change. Even allowing for shortening up the distance by taking proper race lines around all the corners, his AVERAGE speed was still 113-114mph

The fastest SOB class is MOC (Modified engine Open Cockpit) and this year's winner ran the river in 47.XX. That puts them at an average of around 86-88mph.

Here's the course start to finish:

The Red dot is the start and the green dot is the finish - follow the pretty blue line :D

I keep telling you guys - it's not nuts...it's called dedication  :D

So, pics and info - the big players in the sport are what we call Superclass. Basically, other than being limited to a 21' Boat it's pretty much open slather. The drivetrain of choice over the past few years has been the TT Big Blocks cause they can build so much power into them AND because the turbos spool up more gently than a 1271 Blower, engine longevity is much better. The induction system runs custom made intercoolers, and the motors have a 2 speed transmission to help with coming up ot of the hole at launch.

There have been a variety of boat hulls used over the past few years including Connelly, Superclass, and some older classics (one of the boats running this year has a 20 yo hull!) but the latest and greatest has been the Force Hulls. These boats were originally thought to be great for World Title races where they run in big, open bays, as they're a really good rough water boat. One guy here thought differently and has set up 2 new boats specifically to run the river races. Similar to all of the other designs, all the boats are V Bottom with a running pad but these Force hulls don't sit up, they are wet all the way forward to the driver's seat.

After a bit of a slow start with some setup and gremlin issues, they came out in August and, with a guy who had never driven the boat (but has extensive driving and skiing background) took one of the boats out on Friday at 5pm to practice, ran the fastest qualifier on Saturday, and then backed up to win the race on Sunday.

All of a sudden, there was a new player in town with these Force Boats now being seen as a "why?" factor. They run much wetter - MUCH wetter - than the other types of hulls yet they ran faster. It looks like it's coming down to how what the boat does what it does. These boats if let off the leash could probably run well into the 140's but the skiers just can't go that fast. You should see how hard some of em bounce along at 120! The Force hull by way of it's design, is carving out a deeper, wider "hole" in the water. This in turn is making a wider, smoother hole for the skiers to run in.With a smoother surface they aren't tiring as easy, and they can be more consistent in running the whole course.

To back this theory up, the guy who has been one of the top 2 teams here for the past several years has 3 boats in his stable, and one of em is a Force Hull. It was built to compete at the World's in New Zealand and did quite well, but he hasn't been using it as his number 1 river boat, rather choosing to stick with one of the other hull designs. In the B2B a couple of weeks ago he DID run it as his number 1 and they came home as winners, separated by 10 seconds form 2nd place, also a Force Hull. Looks like interesting times ahead here with pushing boundaries...again...

Bear in mind also that when it comes to motor sports, stuff in Australia is expensive. To set up one of these boats form scratch will see you drop between $300K - $400K depending on how many bells and whistles you go for...

Ummm, skis are made of wood and are usually about 7ft long. Yes, Maha is one of the brands used but most of the people here use skis built in Australia. Danny Cropper of DC Skis builds really good custom made stuff. Right down to the metal "shoe" around the ski boots. All made or finished in-house by DC to suit. Wetsuits are also custom made to fit the skier and can include arm restraints. Essentially because the skiers have one hand holding the handles behind their back, if they suffer a fall at high speed, they sometimes don't release that hand fast enough. This then results in the arm being ripped quite violently past them as they fall, and sometimes results in a condition known as "dead arm". To help prevent this, special restraints can be built into the suit to limit the amount of arm travel you have.

Rope lengths are chosen to suit the river you're on. In a big open course they'll probably go 280ft, on a tighter courst 250-260ft. Even at that length, they're still copping a little spray.

It definitely is one of those sports you HAVE to see in person to realise just how fast the skiers are going. You hear the boat coming, it roars past, and it looks impressive, THEN the skiers go past and you go

I went to the Australian e-bay site and did a search of race boats and found 5 or 6 ski race boats.
On the same search in parts though they have nothing comnpared to the U.S. site.

Sometimes we don't realize how lucky we are state side with being able to order supplies and have them in a couple days with cheap shipping and no customs to deal with.
Our used stuff looks to be worth big bucks over there.

On the I/O boats, we have them over here too they just brake all the time :p
I remember seeing some wicked I/O's in the begining of last yrs Parker 300.

mr fun - I hadn't noticed that on the "Superman" pic before - I'm a cooler photographer than I thought

As for "What does one do?" Well, the guy who owns all of the "Hell" boats runs a concrete business. The guy who owns Stinga is a plumber. Oh, and he's retiring Stinga this year. Reportedly has a room built for it to sit in along with all of the trophies, memorabilia, etc it's had over the years. How'd you like THAT sitting in the end of the room where your pool table was!! So, what's replacing the legendary Stinga? He's just ordered 2 x 21' Force Boats. One for him and one for his son.

Good luck to them all I say. Crap, if I could generate enough spare cash to do that, I'd buy one and give it everything I had!!

As for your suggested combination, I think the arneson drive would bring you undone cause of the way the propeller is so exposed. Them ski ropes would go "bing"...

Could always just try a really big blower:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v211/OzDude/Ski%20Racing/DSCF1343.jpg
At least, that's what they used to run here... Turbos are more forgiving, hence the wholesale conversion by all the top teams.

As for prize money / sponsorship / etc. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA *thud*. Ahem, sorry I laughed out loud till I passed out. THIS IS AUSTRALIA. STUFF COSTS LOTS AND YOU PAY FOR EVERYTHING - NO FREE RIDE$!! I had to laugh back in August - on the weekend that a big race was being run they organisers held a "show and shine" event on the Friday afternoon. Theoretically you could have made more money in winning the show and shine than racing the whole weekend. Unfortunately as good as our sport is, there is no ground swell of support outside of the ranks of members. It's finally getting limited TV coverage but it's being pushed into the corner in favour of other events. Such a shame cause this sport is something the whole family can do.

What really hurts though is when something unexpected goes *bang*. It's hard enough cost-wise to keep things running and freshen up the motors but a big bang ends up being in the $xxK bracket. Last year one of the Superclass boats was rounding a bend in the river when he hit a submerged log. It tore the #6 off the back of the boat and obviously left a VERY big hole where that thing called the transom should be. 2min from start to finish - bang to bottom-O-river. Salvage crews recovered it the next day but it took a lot of "digging deep" for that guy to put his boat back together. Nice boat too, all air-brushed paintwork, and a real nice guy that owns it (Col McQuinn).

Chief:

Instigator - if you want to see some boats for sale, do a search on Ski Racing Victoria and look at their classifieds section. It's always got a couple of nice boats in there.

As for pricing - yup - you guys have never had to experience what it's like to buy expensive parts and that's awesome cause it means you all go out there and have a ball at 100mph. Here it's another thing all together. I buy directly from US suppliers when I can because if you buy locally there are too many margins from all the people involved along the way and because Aussies just expect stuff costs a lot, well those that are selling the gear will then mark up accordingly. Not that there's anything wrong with that - when you're in business you sell stuff for what you believe the market will tolerate. It's just that when you find out that the part you just bought for A$90 is worth US$12 from the supplier in America, plus say $8 shipping, you get a little

With regard to the "Parker 300", I'm gonna take a guess here and say that is a 300 mile race?? From what I've seen, y'all don't have anything that's like our ski-race boats in the big TT stuff. These motors are designed for lots of punishment and longevity. That's not to say they don't fail, they do. There's usually 1 or 2 DNF's at a big race but for the most part, the guys who have the cash to spend on the motors and the mechanics to build em, get it right. It would be interesting to see how they would fare in a race such as the Parker.

With some of the smaller boats that run Under 6 Liter class, a couple of the guys have NASCAR shops in the USA build their motors and ship em over fully crated ready to go. NASCAR is the closest comparison for a motor from a torture and load perspective and when you see a 6 Liter boat screaming it's nuts off at 105 for 40min in a boat, you have to pay it respect.

Oh, and turn fins?? They're not turn fins, they're training wheels (stabilisers) :D Sometimes when learning to drive these boats, or in rough conditions, it helps the boat settle a lot better when you add a little down tab to the back of it. The propeller is so far back on these #6 drives, they can feel a little squirly to drive. It's be like adding a 2ft jacking plate to your boat.

gar163y - You guys are nuts! :leaving:

Skiing in those canals next to those bloody rock walls - I don't care if you're not going 130 - you're all still NUTS!! :p

I'd love to come over and see some of your racing though. Probably one of the reasons why you have the popularity is because most of it can be seen by the spectators. Over here, you get to see the boats for such a small portion of the race due to the majority of it being run on rivers.

Hey, do you know the guys that own "Tactics"? They were Down Under a couple of years ago and one of them ended up skiing with a mate of mine I was observing for in an 8 Liter boat for the race. He had the time of his life and they were really good guys too. They gave us their team shirts which was awesome.

Thanks for all your interest guys - keep it coming!

Hehe, yeah I know. I had the pleasure of riding in it, did a little prop testing in it and said to Rick, the owner, sell it. So we did and I'm still sitting beside him in the new boat. His wife was observing that day, his son's skiing, she ended up under the back of the boat.

That damn boat was just bad luck. The bloke who had it before him backed it down the ramp for the first ever ride and a tree fell on his car. Rick took it for a drive and ran it up a bank and took off the screen. Another bloke borrowed it for a race, dropped the skiers in, took off and did a left turn as the skiers got up.

Thing is, that hull type is the fastest Smoc and Moc boat in Australia at present.

It gets better, the bloke came down from sydney to echuca, picked up the boat, hooked it up, got a 100 metres and the first speed hump it , the trailer came off the ball and ran into his car. Got the boat to Sydney and had problems with the 3.0, then he hit a dead body in the Nepean River and buggered his lower.

Oz Dude
12-02-2008, 07:09 PM
olmo40 - ask as many questions as you like :)

The Hawkesbury 120 is a ski race that's run over 2 legs. It's held in August and runs from the Town of Windsor in NSW to Wisemans Ferry along the Hawkesbury river. At the half way point, all the boats are then re-assembled and handed out new grid positions depending on their finishing order, and they all race back. Each leg is 60km, hence the "120" tag...

Hey Jarrah,

Thanks for the offer mate but I've got my spot locked in at Pitt Town. Was going to watch the Powerboat and Superclass go by then head over to the stadium after.

Hopefully this year I'll pick the correct setting on the camera and not blow my shot of Ricky Howard's Hydro!

Did you get that deck finished?? Any news yet on the mota?

I think that photo was real early 90's. that rig ended up running 2.5's as it developed.

Original Mr Walker was a Flightcraft with twins, then a Connelly with twins. They started with the 2.4s triple for testing and ended with S3000s.

the most successful triple rig in australia. and still my favourite all time connelly outboard. to bad its just rotting in a shed in the middle of nowhere with no engines. ( so ive been told)
