....but nobody answered.

I am still wet behind the ears, especially compared to guys like you, so be easy on me.....

Hook- My thoughts would be that there are all kinds of situations a boat could be put in to cause a hook.
Some of those being;
-I witnessed a boat hook when it broke a motor mount.
-Breaking a skeg
-Over negative on trim angle when turning under power.
-Loss or lockup of one motor on a twin engine configuration.

My assumption is that when the bow becomes the rudder and the skeg or whatever is your normal rudder loses bite, you can go around.

Like I said, be easy on me.
Just sharing my thoughts, since no one else would.
I am here to be educated.

There could be a number of reasons. The most common is the hull falls flat creating a directional pivot point. In the mean time the motor is turned and is trying to force the stern in another direction. With normal right hand gearcases this make the problem worse in a left hand turn. A left hand gearcase will help the boat turn, i.e. a racing tunnel. (They don't turn right very well at speed). You rarely see a left hand gearcase hook in a left turn but a right hand gearcase boat will.

With all of the ModVP racing trbocharge did, I would venture to guess that he knows the answer to the question and is mearly quizzing us.

We have a winner!!

first, flyinbrian had all good and logical points and its obvious that he put a lot of thought into it. And all he said is true

Johnny B...I am going to search for that thread, thanks!

In this test Jeff G is the winner!!! Exactly. I wish that this forum was available back in the 80's......took me a couple ejectioins out of the seat and a lot of research to what the f was going on....

Next time you guys take your single engine boat out with a right hand gear case, take a fairly hard turn to the right. You'll see that it is not problem. Now try the left, the boat will not like it. It is most pronouned if you run a high engine height. That big wheel rotating to the right wants to pull the stern of the boat in that direction.

Sounds like Jeff is a seasoned circle guy........

The more you know, the better and safer you are.........

So true!! I love making hard right turns in the Laser. I need a breaker bar to turn the wheel left at speed.;)

...the prop loses forward thrust. While it may not be biting and pushing the boat forward, it still will have a paddle wheel effect, and essentially walk the back end of the boat around.

Gentlemen, a good amount of people looked at this question and didnt answer, as laservee stated. Probably cause they didnt know. Sharing knowledge is what it is all about

In the smaller tunnel boats they are very prone to hooking. What happens is what Rick Racer said is that the boat basically comes down in the front causign the back coming up and the prop will paddle its way and spin you out.
This is one reason why the Mercs run left hand. It helps to keep you glued in the corners unlike the sport c's and 60 stuff.
Thats my experience with spinouts. You could also catch a roller in a corner, but that can cause a barrel roll too.
Brian
PS: Spinouts are a very serious problem that the sport c class faces, it has caused serious accidents including death, and other collisions.

when you drop the nose and the prop is turning slower then what the boat speed is , that it acts like a rudder and catches water on the back side. The angle of the blade and force of the water against the rudder ( prop) will hook the boat. Thats why it will hook in a turn even.... someone chopped the throttle.
