need some advice on set up. any thoughts....
going with 15" mid and a sporty for now. if i like the boat i will get a speedmaster.. not sure what motor to run. i'm building a 2.4 bp for it. i figure it would be a good starter motor. also have a lightly worked 260 that went 110 on a ally ss. and a 260 with drag exhaust and worked front half... dynoed at 325 on pump gas.. the sporty has 1.87 gears. i want to run 800'. any sugestions on where the prop shaft should be in relation to the bottom of the boat????? any help would be great.boat weighs 371.thankspixhttp://i36.tinypic.com/oasuap.jpghttp://i35.tinypic.com/25altky.jpghttp://i38.tinypic.com/15x3io8.jpghttp://i37.tinypic.com/2uf9e2e.jpg

I would recommend a 12" mid and a #4 ssm or a #6ssm.

I think you're going to have some weird handling with the big gearcase and prop. too much lift for that hydro.

I would listen to Gary Pugh and Jon Wright. What ever they tell you go with that and save yourself a lot of trouble.

Talk to Jim Dunn. He seems to be at the top of the points race in the IHBA. ALL THE TIME.

im just learning
but heres what i was told to do and it works (confermend) starting point
set the prop shaft level with the sponson depth then down bubble on the shaft 4 degrees
heres what i did
my buddy and i it takes two people
we put a 8' level flat against the after plane set at level with the sponson bottoms set at level as well
then holding level we measured up to the after plane we got 5 inches
then we took the level to the prop shaft and set that at 5 inches then with a angel finder we set the shaft down bubble 4 degrees
so ebd result my prop shaft is same as the sponsons
and that set up is only if your boat is a designed to be a prop rider not a tail dragger
tail dragger the set up is the same process only you come out about 3/4 of in below or above the after plane bottom
hope that helps good luck
i for one IMO there is no better feeling than riding along along hovering just off the water
its like driving a air boat
do you have a turn fin i dont have one yet youll need it to cruise around your not going to turn around on a dime like those tunnels do

I third what Rondey Nance and T-Rex have to say. Dunn is running Jon Wrights old boat and is set up to run 9 second class and is kickin ASS!!!

I considered buyin your boat and it's still on my list, just have too many projects currently on my list, lol....

As far as the bridgeport, not a good choice for 800', the 260 is far better for low end grunt. I'll prove that in a couple of months when I get the 2nd Kaase rigged. ( I think I own more bridgeports than anyone on this board )

The big gear case??? I've heard from several sources it's not a good combination on a Pugh. Now for my boat, I like the bigger diameter props for holeshot!!! If I could get an XR-6 to live longer than one pass I'd be running one.... especially for 600' - 800'.

AS far as Jon Wright, all I can say is "old school" technology still can't and hasn't been beat with todays computer technology :D:D:D, right Mr. Flinstone????

Hi John,
If the prop shaft is set at the depth of the sponson then there is no angle of attack of the tunnel bottom to the water. Where does the prop run in relation to the water when running at speed? I've been told that the center of the prop shaft runs at the water line at speed. Is this correct?
On my Ron Jones design hull the angle of attack of the tunnel is 2 degrees with the water.

I can see using a very low angle of attack of the tunnel on your Karelson since it was for a kilo run and very high speed. But wouldn't a drag hydro need some angle of attack in the tunnel to help get some lift quickly?

When we talked in Kankakee I think you mentioned you did something to the boat to keep the back from dropping and blowing over. What did you do?
And what is it like driving a hydro like this?

Brent Shaw has a Pugh Hydro with a stock 260 he raced this year. Had to add weight to slow it down to 10 second bracket, said his wifes not ready for him to run 9's

Not but a few Outboard Hydros around, and very few are racing.

People don't run them in heads up racing because it's very hard to add the weight to a hydro. And you can only run them in certain classes.

the tunnel is popular by choice not by history and closer to the pleasure boat side
under 20' :D IMO
