Im replacing the bunks and the carpet on a Skater Trailer, Skater used a very thick carpet, but surly must have held water for a long time, by the looks of the wood.
Im thinking of using pressure treated wood for the bunks, but still looking at carpet, any ideas?

Bass Pro Shops sells carpet in rolls Just for this purpose. I am going to pay close attention to what you end up with because my trailer is ready for carpet this spring.

My dad and I used exterior grade carpet from Lowes... Seemed to be the same grade as the stuff that came on the trailer... had a rubbery backing I think...
Forget the price but it may have been cheaper than "bunk carpet" and probably the same thing...
We also used pressure treated 2x8 or 2x6s... whatever were on our trailer... yours should be easy, straight bunks... or bunks curved... wrestling with 2 bys twisting them is fun!

The best bunk carpet that I've seen is from Shoreland'r. It's not rubber backed so it will let water out but it's quite durable. Great stuff. You may have to contact a distributor to get it though....

Wouldn't you say that cutting 1/4" deep cuts across the 2x's top every... say 1/2" would help drain the carpet faster and keep the boat surface drier? Reading about those gel coat bubbles had me thinking that there must be a way to keep the wetness down and it may be as simple as that.

You can get 12" wide 12' long bunk carpet through Cabela's and it's the non backed stuff..............Brad.

first thanx for all the help,
I have given that some thought, but from what I have seen, that stuff expands and contracts a lot, Im not sure if it would be good for our application, but definitly would last.....

Actually the carpeted cypress bunks require you to just about float the boat off . The wood is so resistant to rot naturally it is not chemically treated . The trees actually grow in water , thats why we have threatened wetlands in FL !!!:D
Try Googling Magic Tilt trailers , Continental Trailers , Gold Coast Trailers , Owens and Sons Trailers , Performance Trailers , Loadmaster Trailers .Fastload Trailers .:thumbsup:

Trick boat 114:eek::eek:;):D:)
The cypress is the wood under the carpet it is very hard and will not absorb water like the rest that is what gives it the longevity.
Tom is right it is the lumber that most trailer companies use. The only problem is that they mostly come in 3X....
Joe, Just call the lumber yard or a local trailer shop.

One issue about useing carpet on bunks is the carpet fills up with turned up sediment and sand at the launch when the trailer is dipped into the water. The end result is scratches on the bottom of the boat.
I bought a new trailer the biginning of this year and had the wood covered with polly bunk covers. They come in 5' sections and they work great. Another problem with carpet is I see alot of people who haven't replaced thier worn carpet and thier slideing the boat on bare wood. I'll never use carpet again !

So where do we get "poly bunk covers"?

A friend of mine is in the Coast Guard in Florida and they replace the bunk boards with King Starboard material, with no carpet. I'm not sure how thick and it may depend on how long the space is between bunk supports.
He said this makes launching and retrieving easy, but you definitely want to make sure the boat is attached to the trailer until your ready to launch because it is going to slide right in and fast. This is great for flat shallow ramps.
