View Full Version : 24 Skater driving

In Powerboat this month, John Tomlinson states "If you can learn to throttle and fly a 24 Skater with old 2.4 two stroke outboards, you can learn to drive anything"

Are the big outboard cats that hard to drive?

.

in my opinion the cats are super easy to drive , i wonder what he was talking about ?

ive been in a 24 skater over 100 and it feels like your going 50 mph in a car

.

i wonder how much time tomlinson has in a small v bottom with a strong v6 on it.

GDM
11-07-2008, 08:49 PM
.

maybe he means flying it offshore in big water?

maybe he is comparing it to driving a 35 or 40 foot cat offshore , that might make good sense

but in regular bay chop the 24 skater is easier to drive then you can imagine

.

Mr Tomlinson was comparing the Skater to inboard cats.

Of course driving an outboard V bottom is a different skill that he may or may not have. He does have a good race record in the big cats.

He is 100% correct! They have said that sinse the boat was built. If you run them with hot power and try to get every last mph out of it they will become a handful.
I should know I blew one over:eek::eek:
The boat will go over some real big stuff it gives you a false sense of security.
Yes, It is not the boat it is the driver;):D

Running big cats with big power is like sitting in your living room going 150 mph +, they usually are very stable going in a straight line, and I emphizise usually, Ive seen big cats blow over going straight, too much tap, tap, tap, on that trim button, but most often its always in the turn, coming in hot, and just a tad of too much wheel, theres always a fine line, and when the boat gets out of its envelope, the words youll here on the intercom is "Oh S**T"

going from a V to a cat is like getting off a jap bike and driving Miss Daisy the cats drive much easier once you get use to there quirks...but also they will give you a false sence of security .... kinda like remembering that your on bias ply tires with drum brakes and the old bitch ain't wear'n a seatbelt

Not so. Any cat with the right guy on the throttles is very safe. Its the clowns who trim them up who blow them over. Friend of mines 1986 24 Skater runs 108 with stock 2.5 offshores. 2 or 3 clicks above all the way down is all it needs to be level and loose.

Not what I meant by that. The people who jump into a cat, thinking its like any go fast boat and just hitting the trim button up and up and up and up, are clowns. Cats take time to learn to run, unfortunately a lot of people dont respect that.

Tony,

I dont think he meant anything by calling anyone a clown, its more like being inept in proceccing information, things are happening real fast at those speeds, and the the ability of knowing through trial and error ( seat time ) that you have taken the boat over the edge of its safe operating range, once you take it out of the envolope your asking for trouble, and as you are aware once it starts happening, usually you cant process the information quick enough to reverse the attitude of the boat.... and then the last words you will here is just like Andy from Mayberry would say "Golly";)

No...... Anybody who talks in the first person through a stuffed animal is a clown.:p:p:p

People who blow over cats are generally going faster than the vee bottoms that they owned before.

For the record.

J.T. made his racing bones in Outboard tunnel boats, then went into offshore. His resume includes driving small and large vees , tunnels and cats of all sizes. He still logs more time than most of us in all kinds of hulls in the PB tests.

Believe me he can drive an Allison......as well as (or better than) anyone.

Not to disrespect Mr Tomlinson, but relatively recently Powerboat slammed a twin outboard V bottom for chine walking. He did not write the article. I think it was a Concept. Powerboat didn't get much speed out of it, stating that they had to scrub off speed with the trim tabs.

I wrote to ask if there was more speed to be had by 'driving', and the response was that modern boats shouldn't chine walk.

Maybe the boat just wasn't that fast, but that got me thinking about driving techniques. Not that I would be qualified to drive a twin engine V bottom or cat.

I didn't know that Mr Tomlinson had raced outboard tunnels. Cool.

Bigger horizons my friend ah yes, but when you take a "THROTTLEMAN" such as the above formentioned and put that "THROTTLEMAN" behind the "WHEEL" of a 21' v bottom with a pad, even you with all your wisdom;), would somehow have to say, well maybe there might be an edge to someone who "WHEELS" one everyday:D, but than again I just do what I do on the GSB, along with you:cool::thumbsup::D

You didn't read the whole post....

JT started as an OPC racer....wheel and throttle....little boats...... He can do it all....just like somebody else we both know.;) Many of the great T-men started in OPC, stock outboard hydros and runabouts, or short course inboards (Sirois, Gilbreath, Powers, Imprescia, Tomlinson, Fountain, Robertson...etc, etc). That's why they are head and shoulders over the other guys. JT's point was if you can handle the smaller boats (I'm sure the 24 Skater was used as an example...not an absolute)...you are MUCH better equipped to race the big ones.

Guys who came out of Mercury (Wayne Vickers, Gene Lanham, Don Pruett, BIll Sirois, Odell Lewis, Richie Powers, John Stenbach, John Sherlock, etc..) had literally thousands of hours in small runabouts, cats, wings, hydros, skiffs and anything else you can imagine. They drove them FULL TIME and got paid for it..........

The same was true of Bill Seebold except he drove at Lake X, Oshkosh, and on his local waters in St Louis testing his own hulls. Couple that to his childhood and young adult years spent racing Outboard hydros, his later Inboard hydro experience and you have the reason why he, along with Sirois, are the two greatest boat racers who ever lived....IMHO.
