I am new to the group, I have recently gotten a 1960 Mercury 700 Direct Reversing outboard that is complete down to the bronze propeller. I have some questions; Does anyone make an internal wiring harness for it? The two dynafloat covers are cracked. Any ideas where I get replacements? It has been sitting many, many years, and I just got it to run a little after replacing the rotted timing belt. Carb floats are stuck; They need kits; I am familiar with oldmercs.com already; What has to be removed to gain access to the carb mounting nuts? Its hard to see them because so much covers them; Rats ate the #6 wire insulation so I need another one. How much oil do I mix in 6 gallons of gas? Any help with parts would greatly be appreciated.

Thanks

Andy

I recently got a 1962 Merc 700 and have gotten some good advise from the guys here, do a search on "Merc 700" to find those threads.

Also I have gotten good advise on the "Antique Outboard Club" website in the "ask a member" section.

Good luck with it.

I need to remove the distributor and starter on my 700DR to get the carbs off; The master service manual doesnt specify how to remove the complete distributor as an assembly; I also dont see anything on how to remove and install the starter either; I know it has been done by the experts on these old mercury engines. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Andy

The starter is actually pretty easy. There are 4 bolts holding it on, 2 at the top (I think you have to remove the top cowl to reach them ... keep track of the stud spacers on the cowl) and 2 at the bottom bracket that go thru the crankcase split (don't take the bottom bracket off the starter itself, take the bracket off the block). Keep the starter shims with the starter. If you can't get the starter off, the carbs are probably beyond your skill level anyway. You do not have to remove the whole distributor assembly unless you are going to change the bearings in the drive tower. Instead, remove the actual distributor from the tower. The carb mounting nuts will still be hard to reach, but the job is much easier than removing the whole distributor assembly and the time and effort it takes to reset the ignition timing.

Mark 75H, what are you doing up at four o'clock in the morning?

It was 7 am here in the east. I was up in the middle of the night on another post ... I had slept during the day when I felt sick and got back up for a while.

I am looking for a MERC 700DR to use for parts; anyone have one? Today I removed the carbs on my 700DR; Pulled the starter, coils, and complete distributor; Not complicated, just time consuming; Fuel lines connecting the carbs broke in half from being stiff and dryrotted. Carb float chambers full of typical junk from years of nonuse. Both fuel pump diaphragms cracked to pieces; That explains why the float chambers never got full. The only real problem I have right now is virtually every wire on the powerhead has the insulation flaking off with the slightest touch; I need an internal harness; Someone suggested rapair, INc. Does anyone have another source? Wires on forward/reverse switch, distributor, coils, are in the same condition. I know Im not the only one who has had this problem; Please help.

Thanks

Andy

I may have the parts you need, I'll look at the wiring harness and see how good it is.

The outboard is a 1962 just got the info. Sorry! Can you or Sam still help???

If so, I need a distributer cap, starter and other misc. It would be excellent if you can help out. Let me know.
