Is the 2.5 Sportmaster housing smaller? Does the 2.5 Sportmaster leak like the 3.0's?? Do you need some kind of adapter to mount it up? Thanks for the help.:) Chuck

There is no advantage and they have a small water pump.

2.5 is a racheting case. if the motor stops the prop will still turn. with the 3.0 if the the motor quits the prop stops and acts like a rudder:eek:. i dont think one is faster than the other

Is the 2.5 case smaller?? Wouldn't that be less drag in the water? Chuck

Chuck, I run 1.75's in my sporty. 1.75's and 1.62's are 3.0 gears. I have em in a 2.5 case!!! purty sure the have almost the same dimensions.

Does any 2.5L lower fit on a 3.0L ? This would open up a much broader search for me !

so the 2.5 sporty never came with 1.75 or 1.62 gears, it wont fit a 3.0 but it ratchets with 1.62s and the 3.0 cannot ratchet

I looked at a 2.5 SM and a 3.0 SM side by side - the 3.0 definitely looks a lot bigger, especially at the rear above the torpedo - can't see how there could not be a performance difference. May be this owuld be minmised if they were ran real high

The cases of the 2.5 and 3.0 Sportmasters are exactly the same outside dimensions (where it matters).

Then my idea doesn't serve any purpose.:) Chuck

In addition to ratcheting, the 2.5 liter Sportmaster does not have the leakage issues of the 3 liter Sportmaster.

Taylor Marine sells a midsection that allows you to use a 2.5 liter Sportmaster on a 3 liter engine.

wouldn't the drive shaft have to be replaced also. I know they are diff splines and diam.

First Sportmaster I had on my 300x, lasted 4 1/2 years. The pounding it took from my 21 Skater egged shaped it. It never ever leaked!!! This one I have now ( purchased brand new from Merc) won't stop leaking. I got the twin shift shaft seal upgrade from Taylor 2 months ago. Ordered the Billet seal package for under the water/pump yesterday. I never hear about these problems on the 2.5 Sportmaster. Chuck

then My Idea Doesn't Serve Any Purpose.:) Chuck

When Wayne Taylor Was Alive I Tried To Get Him To Build Me A 15" Offshore Mid With A 3 Litre Case For My 3 Litre Motor(instead Of The 3 Litre To 2.5 Case One That I Have). He Said That He Had Already Made Them And Would Sell Me One If I Insisted But He Swore That The 2.5 Case Was 3 To 4 Mph Faster. So Far I Havent Had Any Complaints And No Water Issues Like The 3 Litre Case. I Also Had Mine Switched From 1.87's To 1.62's(shoulda Stopped In The Middle!!). As For The Driveshaft I Just Took It To Jack And He Cut The 2.5 Splines Off And Welded 3 Litre Splines On.
