gear problems???
I just picked up another toy, a 1985 16 foot Checkmate with a 1985 Evinrude 115 on the back. Motor is set deep for the previous owner skiing and at the moment has a 17 pitch aluminum prop on it. Had it out on the water yesterday, coming back in at the end of the day and after only ruuning this thing for about 1/2 an hour since I bought it, it seems the lower let go on me. I was running 4800 rpms and all of a sudden the rpm's took off and boat came off of plane. I did not over rev the motor, so that is not a concern. At first, felt like I lost the prop, so I raised the motor and prop was still there. So with prop visible, I refired motor, put in gear and the prop did not spin.
So, is this my sign to repower?? What are your thoughts. I have been away from outboards for awhile and owne stern drive boats, so I am out of tune with this little Johnny-rude...

Linkage under the cowl appears to be ok, gear lube clean (new), no water or metal shavings in it, prop shaft outside gear case good.

spun hub?
The hub does look like it is spun, but with the motor running on a hose, I put it in gear and the prop shaft still does not spin in forward or reverse.

I pulled the prop and saw the condition of the hub and thought I might get out of this easy until I fired it up and shifted it.
Thanks for the input!!
nee to go ahead and pull the foot off and look and the splines on the crank and the splines on the shaft

It has been years since I have done that on an O/B. Can you refresh my memory please. Don't I need to put it in gear and for some reason I thought there was a pin or something I had to mess with on the upper part of the mid.

Probably time to break down and get a manual for the darn thing. You might save $35.00 in time and grief alone! Just my $.02..

True, I have only had this thing for a week and I have about 45 minutes of running time with it. According the the dealer it came from, I should nothave had to worry about anything this quickly.

disconnect the shift cable at the motor and try shifting it by hand.

take a look under the front of the block while shifting to be sure the shift shaft is moving with the linkage. if it is still pumping water the top end of the drive shaft is o.k. . if the shiftshaft is moving with the linkage and the hub is good you need to get the casing off. take the pin out off the shiftshaft under the carbs, remove trimtab and all bolts. 4 bolts on the side one inside trimtab. don't worry about forward and reverse but it will have to be in a position you can access the shiftshaft pin.

Thanks, I could not remember about being in gear or not and it was the shift shaft pin that was not coming to mind. I guess I need to refresh my older o/b knowlege.

I have had the aluminum shift block (the part the screw attaches the shift rod under the carbs) break and cause the same problem.

Well, it was the dive shaft, broke just below the water pump housing. So, I have not picked a a manual yet...anyone care to give me a hint on how to get the shaft out of the gear case...

If the driveshaft is original, it will be a one peice shaft, if it was replaced, it could be a two piece shaft.
If it is a one piece shaft, you will have to pull the prop carrier, get a wrench on the prop nut (the OMC wrench is reccommended), pull the upper driveshaft bearing carrier and try to loosen the pinion nut using a pair of vise grips on the broken shaft. If that does not work, then you will have to get a socket welded to the broken end of the driveshaft and use a breaker bar on it.
If it is a 2 piece shaft, take the upper driveshaft bearing carrier out, smack the broke driveshaft with a hammer with a single, good blow then use a pair of vise grips to pull the broken piece out.
