The cheap foam insulation in my Opti's cowling is coming loose in a few places. I was thinking of replacing it with something like dynamat sound insulation if it would knock the noise down significantly. Has anyone tried this and what adhesive did you use. I was thinking 3M Super 90. The current foam is 1/2"
I know...why would I want it quiter  Its just a fishing boat and when the wife is happy...so is the Captain

I did that to a 2.0 clamshell. It helped but not as much as we expected.

Just got this response from Dynamat:
"Thank you for your interest in Dynamat. For your situation, we would recommend a two product solution. First, apply Dynamat Xtreme to the inside of the engine cover, over Dynamat apply our ½” thick Dynaliner. The combination will deliver superior results to the OEM configuration. Please let us know if you have any additional questions.

This combination is 7/16" thick or 1/16" thicker than the stock 1/2" foam. What products did you guys use.

Dooooh...
1/2" + 1/16" = 9/16"
So, I was on the boat today and put my ear to the cowl and not much noise really comes from the cowl. Most seems to come from the exhaust so I do not know if this will accomplish anything. I may see if a local stereo shop has some scraps if I am goinf to replace the foam anyway.

Be careful of what you use, make sure it is fire retardant. Xome of the stuff the stereo shops use is not.
The stuff I used is designed for engine compartments, you can get it at West Marine.

I would use the stuff that dynmat recommended. It is heat rated for the engine compartment.

SUMITT or jegs sells a foam- foil material used for engine compartments floor pans ect works good ART WHEN the power head is quiet your senses to power output seem sharpened thats what i found being in the cockpit.

When I upgraded from the old Tower of Power to the clamshell V-6 the wife said it sounded like a 'jet boat" Well that was quite the insult..... Put some horns on the air box and Dynamat. Major difference. 7 yrs later the mat is still tight on the inside of the cowling. Used the non-foil backed stuff designed for under the engine bonnet. Wife still boats with me & sleeps with me. And once again, want I to add another 100HP to the boat.....She prolly wants me to add a few inches....

If your goin to the stereo shop anyway...ya might as will pick up a "head knocker" stereo system so ya won't care what the damn moto sounds like cause ya won't hear it!!!:p:D Gary
It has to stay in place and I always thought it might hold in extra heat?

Prior to painting my cowl - I just lined it with Truck rhino liner (roll-on), and put about 6 coats on. It's probably about an 3/32" thick. Works just fine. The 1/2 dyna foam would most likely work well also.
