heres a good one i have a 2.6 on a champion bass boat and it takes forever to plane out took a compression reading and it was all 6 aroun 95# yes that is very low(posted here b4). bought a leakdown tester and all cylinders are between 8 and 10% leakdown this motor has the high compression heads on it. what do you guys think maybe bad compression guage? that leakdown seems about right to me open to suggestions
thanks for your time

Depends on the heads and gasket thickness. 95 might be about right. Try a plate that bolts onto the cavitation plate. I got mine from bobs machine It helps alot. If you have a big pitch thru hub prop, try a lower pitch or an over the hub prop.

A recently overhauled engine will usually have between 110 and 115 with the 638,639 stock heads and stock head gaskets. Have you recently done a decarb on the engine? If not do a decarb, then recheck the compression. Are you running composite reeds, or metal reeds? If you are running composites, check the edges of the reeds for fraying, causing intake compression loss-a common issue with old/high hour composites. The recirc lines can also deteriorate with age. Insure that they are all intact and not cracked/leaking. The engine is not known for high torque at low rpm's like it's brother the 175 bubble back. It is a high port engine that starts to breath over 3000. If you have holeshot problems, invest in a holeshot prop, like a renegade bass, or a vented prop like a raker. They will help the engine get the rpm's (torque) up earlier. You should still have many hours of useable service life left in your engine.

yes it does have the 638,639 heads, have been told by people it should have higher compression then 95#. but since they were all very even i decided to do a leakdown as a double check. I had a 24 raker on it that mark croxton repaired and put pvs holes in but that didnt help much. I will be trying a renegade prop this week. also planning a decarb this week if possible. this boat is new to me 6 months and has had this problem since I got it. hard to tell if it is a set up problem or engine problem cause I have no base line.
thanks for your time

It might have the thicker head gaskets on it. My 2.6 GT runs from 123 to 128 on my gauge.

Check your timing. Set it for a maximum of 26 degrees at 4500 rpm.

The 235s and GT/XPs were a bit anemic on the bottom end. How heavy is the boat? A planing foil may help also.

If you figure it out and get your compression up, ONLY run premium fuel and good oil. I got a dose of bad gas in mine and burned a piston last year. It doesn’t take long either, especially if you load it hard.

I am running it on a champion 201 about 1300# i really think I got a bad compression guage (i rented it from autozone) i might tryto get another one and try to get a base line but the leak down didnt seem too bad to me
thanks
