View Full Version : Difference in a "Pad" and "Non-pad" V hull

In my effort to learn about fast boats I have some questions about "pads" on V hull's.
First, do all V-hull have some sort of "pad" or are they just on go fast boats?
Second, if you have a light weight V-hull without a pad and another boat of the same weight and length with a pad, what kind of difference in performance will there be.
Thanks in advance for putting up with my ignorance.
Once on plane, the pad is the only wetted surface. Crisp edges gets the water to break cleanly at the transom and the result is higher performance with some minor compromise in ride quality in chop.
V-hulls without pads will knife through chop better but wet more hull surface creating more drag and prop slip. Also, since the lifting surfaces aren't parallel to the water, the hull sides can load differentially making high speed driving more challenging.
It's an imprecise tradeoff and, with many variables, a direct comparison becomes an apples/oranges thing requiring many many weekends of happy experimenting with setup.

Damn MIJI...right on the head. Regular v will run smoother in rougher waters. In smoother waters it will not run as fast as a pad v and will be much harder to drive while "aired out". A pad v will still require some driver input to stay on the pad though.

May want to post this question directly to 24 ft Superboat owners for an apple to apple comparison. Pad vs no pad. Early models were 24 degree v without pad later models came with pad them came stepped bottoms.
Having had both -the boat without pad was better in a chop but required more driver input and ran a few miles an hour slower .

Check out this link. The V bottom has a pad.

Although a pad bottom generally doesn't ride as well in the rough, one must make exceptions for Allisons Ally's have pads, go fast, and handle waves well.

Same in my cig. This was the first boat that I built with a pad. They sure don't ride the same, you can feel it in the seat of your pants.

also width and length of pad in relation to the weight and power of the boat will make a big difference...in speed and handling.......

you got that right.... i ride on about a 7"x7" spot when really getting it!!!!!!! if you can take a 2x4 and stand on it on top of a bowling ball.... you might be able to drive a hp padded vee hull..... that is how greg "owner of s/f" has explained it!!!!!!
it takes a while beofre you can turn it loose!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
