What boat? Unless you have a small light boat, there's really no comparison! The 300xs has more torque and at least 50% better on fuel. Last longer and better warrantee.

A friend of mine has a Stiker in Havasu with a 300xs on it and has some handling, chinewalk problems over 95 mph. He said it's in the setup, but he does'nt really know what to do.

Nick I do not know alot but the 2.5 280 15 mid on these boats with a low draft simply gives my boat better balance. I recently moved my fuel tank forward and it made all the difference in the world . She handles like a charm.:)

Nick,
for what you like to do with the boat, if the transom will hold the weight,
you can't beat the 300xs.

I'm interested in this also for my project boat:D Was thinking about getting a 280/260 for the initial punch and great acceleration that I hear they have.
Or I may put my 300X on it, but wondering about the 1.62 gears with a 950# boat..

There is one out here with an ETEC on it:

It seems to handle the weight quite well, I would think you could handle the weight of the 300xs just fine

Nick either way you'll be o.k, I think for what you do you would like the 300 better, last longer and great gas milage. That being said the 280 would be lighter and probobly a little faster on top end as well.
