What was it worth?
New 1965 3.9hp Mercury in box never started, with fuel tank also in box never opened. All in perfect condition(was). All from 1965.
A merc dealer(where i worked) got one from a older guy who wanted to trade for a new one 5hp.

The value is whatever someone is willing to pay.

Probably not much more than a very nice used one of the same age. Its just not a collector thing.

Antique Outboard Collectors of America will have a place to start. My best guess? Probably 600.00 on a good day. Not quite antique-y enough to really draw interest..now, something from 1940's and '50's...

I'm in the AOMC ... half at best. Even from 40's & 50's it has to be something special to bring $600

Mark 75H, I will defer to your experience in this matter as usual. I would guess that the racing outboards with some provenance are probably the some of the more collectible motors out there, is that so? All this old stuff intrigues me. It may be Mint in Box, to use a toy collector's term, but that doesn't necessarily make it valuable.

'zactly.
The most desired motors are generally the ones people wanted when they were kids and now can buy ... generally the Merc Mark 20H ... even though it is the most common racing motor at 4,000 units vs a few dozen of many other models. There are other motors that go for more, generally the super rare stuff that only sells once or twice in a decade like the Soriano/Dupuy motors or an Evinrude Speedibee. But in general most people wouldn't recognize one of these if they tripped over it.

The guy who negotiated the new 5hp for the 1965 was very wise.....

Considering a new 4 hp 4 srike Merc goes for about $1000.00, I think he came out very well, also. The technology is different and the times are different, but I'd rather have a new one if I was going to be using one a bunch.:iagree:

:thumbsup:And the new ones are "japs" isnt they.... I would say 10-15years runnig on the smal japs 0-60hp and 25-35years on the merc twostrokes(in saltwater) thats my experience as merc service mec.:)
One probl the japs have, is corrosion, another is the smal pasages in fuelsys an millimeter treads in aluminium together with corosjon. The differense in my opinon is that the new japs(mercs) made in asia are low cost hi consuming and the us two stroke mercs are high Quality long life products:thumbsup::cheers: Its one way (in my opinon) to see the differense: when they put a millimeter treaded bolt into a low Q aluminium, then its no good. Problems will come.....

....having owned one for a while in the 1960s I traded it for a 5 hp just like the owner of this motor. Reason was that the 3.9 was a notorious "boat shaker", and was hard starting when cold. I'm also an AOMCI member, and my KG-4 "Green Top" Merc Hurricane, which does have recognition as a collectible, will out idle the little 3.9 even when choking on 24:1 oil mix with J-6J Champion plugs. The KG-4, rated by Carl at "7.5+" horsepower, will also run with modern day 9.9s and 15s for top end. The 3.9 is interesting as a "motor still in the box", but that's about all- and if you have ever watched the Antique Road Show- do not lose the box or anything that came in the box with the motor.
