I have had trouble with clutch dog shift pin , I spot weld the clutch dog pin . The reverse gear , we run a blank instead of the reverse gear or put a flat thrust bearing behind the reverse gear. Jeff

ditto to what Jeff said, but you may also want to run the in-line 6 carrier for it's reverse gear bearing instead of the XR-6's bushing. on my 1.78 case the reverse gear teeth are machined off and it's turned down to fit the smaller id of the bearing in the in-line 6 carrier.

Don't forget the driveshaft spline, it's a weak link also. :D

yep, but unfortunately there's nothing that can be done about that expect a high dollar big gear conversion. if your careful with the case and don't run it on a heavy boat the small gear set will take power.
but if your not racing in a Pro Gas or faster class where you need every bit of added performance the rules will allow I'd just stick with a big case. The risk of a small case is just not worth the performance benefit in my mind for just running on the river and playing around. I have 3 small cases for racing, a 1.87, 1.78 and a soon to be built 2 to 1 and I always run my Sportmaster when I'm not racing.

just looking for a few mph without doing any engine mods. also won't be using it as an everyday play case, just to do some top end runs.

Well since no one mentioned this.... the case will crack directly above the prop shaft, not sure if there is something to prevent that or not but I had one built with inline carrier and the housing still cracked:nonod:
